High School Basketball : St. Francis Spoils Unbeaten Record of Crescenta Valley

Guard Allen Freemon scored a game-high 26 points and center Jeff Dyrek added 23 to lead St. Francis to an 82-66 nonleague victory over visiting Crescenta Valley on Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights had 3 players in double figures in giving the Falcons their first loss in 7 games.

Crescenta Valley, which converted 18 of 54 field-goal attempts, trailed, 44-30, at halftime and was outscored in every period except the fourth.

“They just kept drilling the 3-pointers and we could not get back into it,” Crescenta Valley Coach John Goffredo said. “They set the tempo for the whole game and we couldn’t do anything about it.”

Raffie Eskandarian led the Falcons with 20 points and Brian Cortez added 14 points and 8 rebounds.

In other games:

La Canada 58, Channel Islands 42--The Spartans outscored the Raiders, 12-3, in the fourth quarter to take a first-round game in the Alhambra tournament. Henry Joe led Channel Islands (1-4) with 15 points. Jerry Williams added 9 and Jerry Santiago had 8 for the Raiders.

Harvard 94, Campbell Hall 63--Bryan Domyan and Rick Osterloh combined for 36 points as the Saracens cruised to an easy nonleague win at home. Reserve Brian Roberts scored 19 points, most of them on the fast break.

L.A. Baptist 43, Chaminade 42--Forward Brett Craig scored 7 of his 9 points in the fourth quarter, including a game-winning 8-foot jump shot with 4 seconds to play. Teammate J. D. Strong finished with 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Chaminade guard Chris Brackner led all scorers with 15 points.

St. Genevieve 60, Agoura 52--Carlos Gonzalez scored 14 points and 3 other Valiants scored in double figures as St. Genevieve won a nonleague game at Agoura. Ron Nielson scored 13 points, Marc Colon had 12 and Mike Cassidy 11 for the Valiants.

Agoura (0-4) was led by Gabe Bennett’s 13 points and sophomore Sean Martin’s 12.

Burroughs 76, Hoover 54--Leading by 5 at the end of 3 quarters, the Indians blew the game open in the fourth quarter and outscored the Tornadoes by 17. Marnie Calderon scored 8 of his 14 points in the final quarter. Burroughs forward Dan Murphy scored a game-high 23 points.

John Hillman led Hoover with 20 points.

Oakwood 52, Whitney 44--Jon Mark scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the nonleague game at Whitney to become the first player other than UCLA-bound Mitchell Butler to lead Oakwood (4-1) in scoring this season. Butler scored 13 points and had 17 rebounds.

St. Monica 100, Sherman Oaks CES 83--Despite 40 points from Marcus Littlejohn, Sherman Oaks CES (3-5) dropped the second-round L.A. Invitational contest.

John McFarland had 22 points for St. Monica (7-0) and Albert Jones had 21.

GIRLS

Hart 65, Reseda 50--Led by 6-3 junior forward Sara Wilson, Hart used its height advantage to defeat 2-time City Section 3-A Division champion Reseda, 65-50, in a nonleague game.

Wilson, one of 4 Hart starters 6-foot or taller, scored most of her points within 8 feet of the basket and finished with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Wilson had 12 points in the third quarter as the Indians outscored Reseda, 19-10, to extend their lead to 16 points.

Hart, which has played 8 games in 13 days, improved to 7-1.

Aggie Garcia had 15 points and Denisha Jordan had 12 to lead Reseda (3-1). Cheryl Hightower, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter, had 10 points, including 2 3-point shots.
