Oklahoma State tailback Barry Sanders was named The Sporting News’ 1988 college football player of the year. Sanders, the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner, set National Collegiate Athletic Assn. records with 2,628 yards rushing, 39 touchdowns and 3,250 all-purpose yards in a season and an average of 295.5 all-purpose yards a game.
