Share

Officials on Friday identified the man who was shot by Tustin police as he allegedly threatened an officer with a gun Thursday night.

Deputy District Atty. Wallace J. Wade said Frank DiStefano , 24, of Tustin was in stable condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana following the shooting about 7:45 p.m. Thursday night. Hospital officials, at the request of police, declined to release any information about the man’s condition.

Tustin police said they went to the 17500 block of Vandenberg Lane on Thursday night after getting 911 emergency calls about “a man with a gun” in the Quail Meadows Condominiums. Police said the gunman had fired at least one shot before their arrival, but no one was hurt.

After police arrived, the man pointed a gun at one of the officers, and another officer fired his shotgun, according to police.

Wade said Tustin officers have not yet charged the man with any crime. Wade said few details are known on why the man was at the condominium complex or why he had a gun. Wade said DiStefano may have had a relative who lived in the complex.

The district attorney’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting, as is customary in all such cases. Wade said it will probably be 2 to 3 months before a final report on the investigation is completed.
