Riggins Coaches 100th Victory for Aztec Women

San Diego State’s Earnest Riggins coached his 100th career victory Friday as the Aztec women’s basketball team defeated Pacific, 76-55, in a Big West Conference game.

The Aztecs (7-0) made 50% of their shots from the field and 71% from the free throw line. They were paced by Chana Perry’s 28 points (12 for 17) and 16 rebounds. Teammate Julie Evans was 9 for 9 for 18 points.

Julie Szukalski led Pacific (1-5) with 15 points.

SDSU, ranked 15th nationally, meets Arizona State in Tempe Monday night.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego-based Athletes in Action, coming as close as it will to playing a “home” game this season, responded by beating UC San Diego, 125-82, at Triton Gym.

AIA shot 54% and was led by Anthony Watson and Zack Jones with 21 points apiece. Forest McKenzie added 19 for AIA. Dan Troy scored 16 points for UCSD, which shot only 32%. AIA led, 65-48, at halftime.

Mark Kraatz scored 22 points, including the first 8 by either team in overtime, as visiting Christian Heritage defeated Cal Baptist, 92-85.

While Kraatz was heating up in overtime, Cal Baptist was ice cold, missing its first seven shots. The score was 80-80 at the end of regulation.

Kraatz was one of five Christian Heritage players to score in double figures. Bill Soucie had 18 points, Will Cunningham 17, Rundy Foster 12 and David Kirksey 10.

Michael Banks led Cal Baptist with 23 points.

Christian Heritage is 8-2, Cal Baptist 7-3.
