Rusty Aztecs at Arizona State

The San Diego State men’s basketball team has two problems to overcome tonight when it plays Arizona State at 6:30 in Tempe, Ariz.

One is the rust caused by an 11-day layoff; the other is a 4-1 Pacific-10 Conference team. Upsetting the Sun Devils would be significant for a building Western Athletic Conference program.

“That’s always in the back of your mind,” SDSU Coach Jim Brandenburg said. “You’d like to play well. I’d like to get them here.”

In 2 years, the Aztecs will play the Sun Devils in San Diego. But for now, they’ll do so in Tempe, after not having played since a 58-43 loss at Texas Tech Dec. 5. That was the first loss of the season for the Aztecs (3-1), off to their best start since 1984-1985.

“We still show signs of inconsistency,” Brandenburg said. “We do everything well at times, but we don’t do everything right any of the time.”

Arizona State’s only loss was in the Richmond tournament, by one point in overtime to Alabama.
