A driver killed one pedestrian and injured another after speeding away from sheriff’s deputies trying to make a routine traffic stop just north of Gardena, the California Highway Patrol said.

Jeffrey Sanders, 27, of Inglewood was arrested on suspicion of murder Thursday night after the car he was allegedly driving hit two pedestrians and crashed in an alley. Sanders was being held in the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Deputies were patrolling near 112th Street and Mariposa Avenue in South-Central Los Angeles about 5 p.m. when they saw Sanders driving a car with outdated registration stickers, CHP spokesman Richard Richards said.

When deputies turned on their emergency lights to stop him, Sanders sped north on Mariposa, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Janet Williams. The patrol car chased Sanders for a short time but gave up because the wet roads were dangerous, Richards said. Sanders turned east on 111th Street and drove six blocks at speeds up to 70 m.p.h. before he entered an alley that connects 111th Street with Vermont Avenue, Richards said.

In the alley, Sanders allegedly hit two pedestrians--Hugo Garcia, 21, and Hector Guttierez, 13, both of Los Angeles. Sanders was arrested in the alley where the car had crashed.

Garcia died at the scene, and Guttierez was taken to Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
