Andy Silva, the Simi Valley High boys’ soccer coach, purposely sought teams outside the Southland to fill out the field for this week’s Simi Valley tournament.

And Silva’s Pioneers fell victim to that effort Tuesday, losing to West of Bakersfield, 2-0. The victory advanced West to the championship semifinals.

West scored its first goal midway through the first period and added an insurance goal with less than a minute to play. The loss snapped a string of 7 consecutive shutouts by the Pioneers.

“We played a good game but not good enough to win,” Silva said. “Once they got the lead, they were always looking to go back to the keeper to slow the game up.”

In other tournament games:

Thousand Oaks 1, Patrick Henry (San Diego) 0--Senior left wing John Spellman scored 20 minutes into the second half to lead the Lancers into a consolation-bracket championship match at 1:30 this afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Thousand Oaks defeated Dos Pueblos, 4-3, in overtime. Goalie Allen Reer made a save on a penalty kick and Jay Ashkinos scored the winning goal as the Lancers won on penalty kicks.

Calabasas 5, Arroyo Grande 0--The win advanced the Coyotes (5-3) into today’s 11:30 a.m. consolation final against Chaminade.

The shutout was the third consecutive for goalie Bill Shaw.

“Getting a shutout is a team thing,” Coach John Reich said. “Bill hasn’t had to make the saves in the last few games because our defense has been doing such a good job.”

Bennett Fisher led the Coyotes with 2 goals. Earlier in the day, Calabasas defeated Rio Mesa, 5-0, led by 2 goals each from Fisher and Brian Smalarz. Chaminade 5, Moorpark 0--Coming off a 1-0 upset of Royal earlier in the day, Moorpark struggled in the consolation semifinals.

Earlier in the day, Chaminade beat Bishop Montgomery, 2-0, on goals by Mulla and Alcazar.
