NEWS IN BRIEF : Case of the Missing Toyota
Los Angeles police were looking for a stolen car Friday.
Were they ever.
It was a 1985 white Toyota that vanished from its parking place near Hill and Ord streets in Chinatown on Thursday evening.
An undercover narcotics officer, who was unidentified, said he left the unmarked car at 6:45 p.m. for dinner and to attend a meeting about a narcotics case. When he returned about 9 p.m., no car.
In it were his badge, a department-issue 9-millimeter Beretta pistol, a .38-caliber “off-duty” handgun, a bulletproof vest and two pairs of handcuffs, said Police Department information officer Bill Frio.
Police did get back some ammunition, a flashlight and a baton, however. They were in an equipment bag found discarded outside a Long Beach school early Friday morning.
