Loyola Marymount forward Hank Gathers scored 39 and 49 points in two victories to earn West Coast Athletic Conference and Sports Illustrated Player of the Week honors. The 6-7 junior tied a school record with 49 points against Reno and had 26 rebounds. Gathers is averaging 34.4 points and 14.1 rebounds a game, ranking among the nation’s leaders in both categories.

Redondo boasted the South Bay’s hottest prep basketball program last week as the varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams reached the finals of tournaments. The varsity and JV lost in the finals of the Nogales and Redondo tournaments while the freshmen won at Palos Verdes.
