Boys’ Roundup : DeVreugd, Laguna Hills Hand Laguna Beach Fourth Loss in Five Games

Center Trent DeVreugd, who had the flu and wasn’t expected to play Wednesday, scored 11 points in the second half to lead host Laguna Hills High School to a 67-49 victory over Laguna Beach in the Pacific Coast League boys’ basketball opener for both schools.

DeVreugd made 5 of 6 free throws in the final quarter. Teammate Pat Nelson added 15 points and 8 rebounds for Laguna Hills (9-6, 1-0). Laguna Beach (6-8, 0-1) has lost 4 of its last 5 games.

In other Pacific Coast League play:

Woodbridge 56, Costa Mesa 51--Bo Ashkenazy scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, and junior forward Joe Cohen scored 14 points and had 14 rebounds in the teams’ league opener at Woodbridge. Ashkenazy hit 2 3-point shots in the fourth quarter while Woodbridge (3-9) overcame a 42-38 deficit. Tim Nguyen led Costa Mesa with 18 points and Tuan Vu scored 15.

In Angelus League boys’ basketball:

Mater Dei 71, Bishop Montgomery 42--Bishop Montgomery’s four-corner slowdown tactics backfired as the Knights found themselves trailing, 9-0, at the end of the first quarter. Center Derek Stone led host Mater Dei (17-2, 2-0) with 15 points.

St. Paul 84, Servite 63--Greg Willig scored 38 points to lead St. Paul (13-5). The Swordsmen led, 24-12, after the first quarter and outscored Servite, 24-8, in the second quarter to lead 48-20 at halftime. Steve Marusich had 15 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 30 points on 8-of-11 shooting for Servite (10-6, 1-1). Teammate Jamie Rosencranz added 11 points.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 58, Esperanza 44--Mark Johnson scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds, and point guard Jarad Rice scored 17 points and had 7 assists for Cypress (7-9, 2-0).

El Dorado 89, Katella 65--Mike Renaud scored 29 points to lead host El Dorado (12-4, 1-1). Matt Luke had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Golden Hawks. Katella is 5-9, 1-1.

Los Alamitos 65, Loara 55--Robert Conlisk had 19 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to lead Los Alamitos. Mike Wilson scored 20 points for the Griffins (6-11, 1-1). Tes Whitlock scored 29 points for Loara (2-11, 0-2).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 46, Buena Park 40--David Stevens and Anthony Ortiz scored 17 points apiece to pace La Habra (2-0 in league play). Richard Harvey scored 15 points, had 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots to lead Buena Park (0-2 in league play).

Sunny Hills 62, Sonora 41--Forward Marcus Hopkins scored 16 points, guard Jeff White scored 14 points and sophomore reserve David Ragsdale added 11 for first-place Sunny Hills (10-6, 2-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 85, Santiago 45--Scott Campbell scored 31 points as host La Quinta remained undefeated in league play. The Aztecs (9-4, 4-0) led, 18-15, at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Cavaliers, 25-2, in the second quarter to take a 43-17 lead at halftime. It was the eighth consecutive game that Campbell has scored 30 points or more. Duane Kale scored 16 points for La Quinta. Jason Heskett scored 20 points for Santiago (0-9, 0-4).

Kennedy 84, Los Amigos 42--Jim Barker had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead host Kennedy (10-6, 3-1). Mike Pettengill and Tom Deep each scored 14 points for the Fighting Irish. Pettengill also had 8 assists. Carlos Palomino scored 20 points for Los Amigos (2-9, 1-3).

Pacifica 70, Bolsa Grande 34--Randy Schulze scored 18 points and Dustin Bonham added 13 to lead Pacifica (9-3, 4-0). Bolsa is (1-10, 0-4).

Rancho Alamitos 82, Garden Grove 48--Richard Pearce and Gary Lira each scored 16 points to lead host Rancho Alamitos (5-5, 2-2). Pearce also had 9 rebounds. Joe Squyres scored 10 points for Garden Grove (2-11, 1-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 80, Orange 57--Rick Swanwick scored 27 points, Randy Kriech 16 and 11 other players scored for Trabuco Hills, which led, 42-25, at halftime. Rick Afalava scored 13 and Rob Sallinger added 12 for Orange (2-10, 0-1).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 75, Edison 67--Mike Merli scored 20 points to lead Fountain Valley (14-2, 2-0) at Edison. Merli scored scored 17 points and Derick Corcoran 15 for the Barons. Bill Martineau scored 26 points for Edison (8-10, 1-1).

Huntington Beach 62, Marina 61--Jeff Long scored at the buzzer to give the host Oilers (6-9, 1-1) the victory. Huntington Beach trailed, 61-60, but had the ball with 3 seconds left. Andy Thompson missed a 15-foot jump shot, but Long grabbed the rebound and scored. Long had 21 points. Thi Nguyen scored 22 points for Marina (8-9, 0-2).

Ocean View 88, Westminster 27--Darren Ernst and Greg Evans scored 7 points apiece in the first quarter to spark Ocean View, which opened a 28-10 first-quarter lead and was never headed. Ocean View is 10-5, 1-1. Westminster is 3-11, 0-2.
