From Times staff and wire service reports

University of North Carolina President C. D. Spangler today said North Carolina State University Chancellor Bruce Poulton will conduct an investigation of allegations about the Wolfpack basketball program.

Spangler told the university system Board of Governors, which oversees all schools in the state university system including N.C. State, that the investigation will be aided by the state attorney general’s office.

The allegations are contained in an upcoming book by Simon & Schuster’s Pocketbooks division entitled “Personal Fouls.” A dust jacket obtained last week by the News and Observer of Raleigh said the book will claim that players received cash and cars and that grades were changed and the result of a drug test was suppressed.

N.C. State basketball Coach and Athletic Director Jim Valvano has said the allegations are false, as has Poulton.
