U.S. International Tries to Continue Success on Trip

The U.S. International University men’s basketball team will try for its third victory in the past four road games tonight when it plays at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Gulls defeated Manhattan College, 94-73, Thursday. It was the first time since USIU moved to NCAA Division I in 1979 that the Gulls had won more than once on the road in a single season.

Winthrop (6-6) returns four starters from last year’s team, which the Gulls, 75-58, at Golden Hall and is led by forward Greg Washington (16.9 points per game). USIU (7-12) is led by Gary Williams (17.4 points).

WOMENS’ BASKETBALL

Beth Koenig made 2 free throws with 44 seconds to play to give the UC San Diego the lead for good in a 69-67 victory over Point Loma Nazarene at UCSD.

Candida Echevarria scored a career-high 23 points, but the University of San Diego (5-10, 0-1) lost in overtime, 69-65, to visiting Gonzaga (5-10, 1-0) in a West Coast Athletic Conference game.

TRACK

The indoor Michelob Invitational Track Meet will not be staged in 1989, meet organizer Al Franken said. The withdrawal of the sponsor coupled with insufficient time to organize the event led to the decision to cancel the meet’s indoor version, he said.

The Michelob meet had been staged annually at the San Diego Sports Arena since 1967 but was moved outdoors for the first time last year.

TENNIS

Bill Siedel of La Jolla defeated Al Miller (Carlsbad) 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the men’s 80s singles final of the San Diego Senior Heart Assn. Tournament at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.

BOXING

James (The Heat) Kinchen of San Diego will fight Chris Tiozzo of France in a 10-round super-middleweight bout March 10 at Paris, the Houston Boxing Assn. announced.
