STATE : San Jose Policeman Killed; 2nd Hurt

SAN JOSE — A policeman was killed and another wounded today in a struggle with a man the officers were trying to question in front of a downtown doughnut shop, Sgt. Bud Davis, police spokesman, said.
Police responding to the scene shot and wounded a suspect before taking him into custody. His condition was not immediately disclosed. Witnesses said the incident erupted shortly after noon at 5th and Santa Clara streets when the officers stopped a man for questioning in the parking lot of a Winchell’s store. The suspect began struggling with the officers, grabbed a police pistol and fired several times.
