College Basketball : Valley Women Put End to Moorpark’s Streak

Ruth Aguilar scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Valley College defeated Moorpark, 75-58, Saturday at Moorpark in a Western State Conference contest that ended the Lady Raiders’ 20-game conference winning streak.

The game featured 2 teams ranked among the best in the state. Valley was rated eighth in the latest JC Athletic Bureau poll and Moorpark was 17th.

Aguilar, a sophomore center, also added 5 assists and 4 steals.

Christine Rumfola scored 14 points and Tisa Rush added 13 points, 4 assists and 3 steals for Valley (20-3, 5-1).

The Lady Monarchs, who have won 15 of their past 16 games, outrebounded Moorpark, 43-24.

Susie Smiley had a team-high 17 points for Moorpark (17-5, 4-1).

Moorpark was playing its second game without leading scorer and rebounder Kerrie Marshall, who left the team early last week after a dispute with Coach Gary Abraham.

CSUN 78, Cal Poly SLO 69: Chris Cavalin scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Cal State Northridge ran its record to 14-3 with a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. win at Cal Poly SLO.

The 16th-ranked Lady Matadors, 2-0 in the CCAA, have won 5 in a row.

San Luis Obispo (8-8, 0-2) committed 25 turnovers. The Lady Mustangs shot 50.8% to Northridge’s 43.3%, but CSUN made 20 of 27 free throws. Cavalin, a senior center, was 7 of 8 from the line.

Julie Arlotto, a sophomore forward, gave Cavalin plenty of support inside, scoring 16 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.

Bridgette Ealy added 15 points for CSUN.

Gina Cardinet had 20 points and 9 rebounds for San Luis Obispo.

Azusa Pacific 86, Cal Lutheran 76--Christy Pollard scored a career-high 25 points and teammate Amy Walter added 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars nursed an early lead in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Brenda Lee paced the Regals (4-10, 1-2) with 19 points. Leslie Stevens and Heidi Griffith added 13 and 10 points.

MEN

Redlands 102, Occidental 96--Despite Chris Anderson’s season-high 33 points, the Tigers fell in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Redlands.

Occidental’s John Keister scored 22 and Brett Dennis added 11.

Azusa Pacific 88, Cal Lutheran 59--Michael Benton scored 30 points and had 9 rebounds, both game-highs, as Azusa Pacific snapped its 7-game losing streak and sent the Kingsmen to their eighth consecutive defeat in the Golden State Athletic Conference game at Azusa Pacific.

Steve deLaveaga led the Kingsmen with 16 points and Mike Demeter added 15.

Blake Miraglia had 8 rebounds for Cal Lutheran (6-12, 0-4), which outrebounded Azusa Pacific, 39-33.
