Prep Basketball Roundup : Rathbun and Woodbridge Top Trabuco Hills, 50-46

Leslie Rathbun scored 5 of her 20 points and played tough defense in the fourth quarter as Woodbridge High School scored a 50-46 victory over Trabuco Hills on Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League girls’ basketball game at Trabuco Hills.

Woodbridge (15-5 overall, 5-0 in league play) trailed Trabuco Hills, 34-30, after three quarters. The Mustangs (11-6, 4-1) got their biggest lead of the game, 38-31, 22 seconds into the fourth quarter. But the Warriors cut the lead to 40-39 in the next 3 minutes.

After Marta Bickert’s field goal and DeDe Sampson’s free throw extended Trabuco Hills’ lead to 43-39 with 4 minutes left, Kris Willis scored on an inside drive and free throw to cut the lead to 43-42.

With 2:57 left, Rathbun, who had stolen the ball from Sampson, hit an outside bank shot to give the Warriors a 44-43 lead.

Woodbridge built its lead to 50-43 and did not allow another Trabuco Hills point until Bickert hit a 3-point shot with 13 seconds left.

Sampson, who turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter under Rathbun’s pressure, finished the game with 23 points.

In other Pacific Coast League games:

Costa Mesa 50, Laguna Beach 45--Host Costa Mesa rallied from a 24-4 deficit in the first half. Kim Good led Costa Mesa (6-12, 2-3) with 18 points.

Orange 47, Laguna Hills 28--Laurie Sallinger had 9 points and 12 steals for Orange, which opened up a 25-5 halftime lead.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 43, Cal Lutheran 34--Sharon Crouch had 17 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists to lead visiting Liberty Christian (12-4, 5-0).

In the Olympic League:

Whitney 61, Capistrano Valley Christian 41--Kim Moon had a game-high 26 points for visiting Whitney.

Santa Margarita 40, Orange Lutheran 29--After a 2-2 first quarter and a 12-12 halftime score, Santa Margarita pulled away at home.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 63, Magnolia 24--Jinelle Williams had 31 points to lead host Brea. Williams, a sophomore forward, also had 10 rebounds. Brea is 17-2, 5-0. Magnolia is 1-4 in league play.

Savanna 73, Anaheim 16--Jackie Boxley had 20 points and Lisa Rios added 10 points and 10 rebounds for host Savanna.

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 71, Newport Harbor 59--Saddleback’s Melody Mayfield led all scorers with 34 points at Saddleback.

Tustin 71, Corona del Mar 36--At Tustin, Teresa Perkins had 22 points and DeeDee Anderson 21 for the Tillers.

In Academy League boys’ games:

St. Michael’s Prep 79, Heritage 61--Nick Groblier scored 31 points to lead St. Michael’s at South Coast Valley YMCA.

In Olympic League boys’ games:

Capistrano Valley Christian 71, Whitney 68--Chris Elliott rebounded a missed free throw, scored, was fouled and sank the free throw with 2 seconds left to give visiting Capistrano Valley Christian the victory.

Ontario Christian 58, Whittier Christian 57--Billy Mouw’s 3-pointer with 17 seconds left gave Ontario Christian (13-5, 5-3) a comeback victory at Whittier Christian (13-5, 6-2).

Orange Lutheran 78, Santa Margarita 66--Jeff Layne’s 17 points led Orange Lutheran (15-3, 8-0) at home.
