College Basketball Roundup : Irvin Continues His Scoring, Missouri Continues Winning

Byron Irvin scored a dozen of his 28 points during a 19-5 second-half run that brought fifth-ranked Missouri from behind for an 87-73 victory over Maryland Tuesday night at College Park, Md.

Irvin totalled 20 points in the second half to lead Missouri (17-3) to its eighth straight victory. Maryland (6-11) has lost 8 in a row.

It was the third straight game in which Irvin has led the Tigers in scoring. He has averaged 31 points during the streak.

Missouri led by as many as 13 points in the first half and had a 37-26 lead with 2:13 left in the half, but Maryland scored the next 6 points to take a 37-32 halftime lead. The Terrapins opened the second half with a 17-6 run to take a 49-43 lead with 14:08 left..

The Tigers responded with 6 straight points, tying the score, and then traded baskets with Maryland until Lee Coward put Missouri ahead, 56-55, on a 3-point play.

After a Maryland turnover, Coward fed Irvin for a layup that resulted in another 3-point play. Irvin added another 3-point play and 2 3-point baskets as the Tigers built a 72-60 lead with 6:42 remaining.

Syracuse 72, Boston College 60--Sherman Douglas scored 19 points as the No. 14-ranked Orangemen snapped a 3-game Big East losing streak at Syracuse.

It was only the second conference win in 6 games for Syracuse (16-4). The win lifted the Orangemen out of the Big East cellar, a spot now occupied by Boston College (8-8, 1-5). It was the fourth straight loss for the Eagles.

Boston College pulled within 39-35 early in the second period, but Derrick Coleman scored a basket and a free throw, and Matt Roe and Steven Thompson made 3-point shots to push the Orangemen’s lead to 48-37 with 15:06 to play.

Providence 106, Miami 91--Carlton Screen scored 27 points and keyed an early second-half run to lead the No. 20 Friars (15-2) to the easy victory at Miami.

Screen scored the final 5 points of the first half to give Providence a 51-50 edge. Four minutes into the second half, the Friars began a 19-3 run that included 8 points by Screen. Miami is 10-8.

Notre Dame 85, Rutgers 63--Freshman LaPhonso Ellis had 2 consecutive 3-point plays while scoring 10 points during a decisive 15-6 run in the second half to help the Irish beat the Scarlet Knights at South Bend, Ind.

The Irish (9-3) broke the game open in the second half when they shot 58%, making 18 of 31 shots while outscoring Rutgers, 49-34. The Scarlet Knights (6-9), meanwhile, had their problems in connecting on only 30%, making only 11 of 37 shots.

Notre Dame led, 46-32, with 16:23 left, after Ellis, who scored 17 points, made his 3-point plays, and Rutgers never threatened again.

St. Bonaventure 94, Penn State 93--Ed Fogell of the Nittany Lions was called for goaltending on Rocky Llewellyn’s follow shot with 3 seconds left, giving the Bonnies the Atlantic 10 win at Olean, N.Y.

Llewellyn scored 28 points, and junior Kyle Anglin added a career-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead the Bonnies (10-6, 4-3).

Monroe Brown put the Nittany Lions (9-7, 5-3), ahead, 93-92, with a 3-point play with 36 seconds left. Then after St. Bonaventure guard Michael Burnett missed a baseline jumper, Llewellyn grabbed the rebound, and his shot was tipped off the rim by Fogell.
