Gus Macker Event Begins on Saturday

The world’s foremost 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Gus Macker, will be Saturday and Sunday in the east section of the San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium parking lot. Play on 36 courts begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Player registration begins today from noon to 7 p.m. in the stadium parking lot, where players may pick up their T-shirts, squeeze bottles and official ID bracelet. Player registration will also be held Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

FOOTBALL

Andy Loveland, the quarterback who led San Pasqual High School to an appearance in the San Diego Section 2-A championship game the past 2 years, has verbally committed to attend Colorado State University.

In 12 games in 1988, Loveland completed 59 of 124 passes for 1,078 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also ran for 632 yards (7.1 yards a carry).

Rob Gilster, 27, will succeed Dave Lay as football coach at Orange Glen High School, Athletic Director Bill Rutledge said. Gilster has been an assistant at Orange Glen the past 5 seasons.

Lay moved on to San Diego State, where he will be the offensive coordinator next season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chana Perry scored 21 points and had a school-record 8 blocked shots to lead San Diego State to a 56-52 Big West Conference victory over Hawaii at Peterson Gym.
