College Basketball Roundup : Sidelines to Headlines for Jadlow in Indiana Win

Todd Jadlow has been riding the bench, but when Coach Bob Knight put him back in the lineup it proved to be another stroke of genius.

Jadlow collected 32 points and 13 rebounds Monday night, leading No. 17 Indiana to a 104-89 Big Ten victory over ninth-ranked Iowa at Bloomington, Ind.

“I started him because we needed the inside scoring that we didn’t have in Saturday’s game (a loss to Illinois),” Knight said. “Jadlow did a good job inside. Our players got Jadlow the ball. He’s had these kinds of games before. It’s just a matter of him getting his mind into the game and he did that tonight.”

Jadlow, who failed to score in 30 minutes in against Illinois and brought a conference mark of 38.5% from the free throw line into the game, made 18 consecutive free throws before he missed his last 2.

Indiana (17-5 overall, 7-1 in the Big Ten) built a 13-point lead that Iowa (15-4, 3-3) cut to 77-75 with 8:01 left. Eric Anderson hit a field goal and Jay Edwards sank 2 free throws as the Hoosiers pulled away by holding the Hawkeyes scoreless for 4 1/2 minutes.

Jay Edwards added 28 points for Indiana. B.J. Armstrong scored 27 and Ed Horton had 26 for Iowa.

Pittsburgh 85, St. John’s 81--Brian Shorter had 20 points and the Panthers scored the first 11 points in overtime to turn back the Redmen in a Big East game at New York.

After Pitt (11-8, 4-4) missed a last-second chance to win in regulation, the Panthers took charge in overtime. Shorter’s basket 15 seconds into the extra period broke a 73-73 tie and Jason Matthews added a 3-point shot and 4 free throws.

St. John’s (12-7, 4-5) trailing, 84-73, with 51 seconds left, rallied on 3-point shots by Terence Mullin and Matt Brust, but fell short.

Robert Werdann’s basket with 35 seconds left in regulation lifted the Redmen into a 73-73 tie. Pitt missed 2 shots in the final seconds.

Matthews scored 18 points and Bobby Martin had 16 for Pitt. Jayson Williams had 19 points and 13 rebounds for St. John’s, Jason Buchanan added 17 points and Billy Singleton scored 14.

Washington 89, Pacific 70--Eldridge Recasner scored 20 of his 32 points in the second half and the Huskies beat the Tigers at Seattle.

Pacific (5-13) trailed, 44-29, at halftime but cut the lead to 53-44 before the Huskies (8-10) reeled off a 17-6 spurt for a 70-50 lead with 8:31 left. Recasner scored 18 of Washington’s first 31 points in the second half.

Don Little scored 14 points for Pacific, which lost its 19th straight road game.

San Diego State 69, Wyoming 61--Michael Best and Mitch McMullen scored 16 points apiece as the Aztecs snapped a 5-game Western Athletic Conference losing streak by downing the Cowboys at San Diego.

Best scored 11 points in the first 10:05 of the second half, helping San Diego (9-9, 3-5) to expand a 34-30 halftime lead to 52-39.

Reggie Fox scored 19 points for Wyoming (10-10, 2-4).
