Laguna Council Hearing on Club Postnuclear Alcohol Sale Plan Postponed

The Laguna Beach City Council hearing on whether to allow beer sales at Club Postnuclear will be postponed from Tuesday to Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.

Club owner William (Max) Nee requested the delay Wednesday because he has been ill with the flu for more than a week and his preparations for making his case before the council have been interrupted, said Aldo Bender, Postnuclear’s marketing director.

City Clerk Verna Rollinger said that under City Council policy, Nee is entitled to one continuance, so his request to push back the hearing will be granted.

Bender said Postnuclear will use the extra time to marshal the support of its patrons, including Laguna Beach business figures who have been to shows at the rock music club.

Nee has said beer sales are important if the club is to expand its audience base and its musical offerings. However, his plan to abandon Postnuclear’s no-alcohol policy has generated some opposition from city officials, prompting the hearing before the City Council.

Announcements will be made and sign-up sheets posted at the club, Bender said, so that customers can testify in favor of Postnuclear’s proposal.

“I would like a nicely organized, well-orchestrated effort to show the City Council that we do have friends and there are a lot of people who do like what Club Postnuclear is doing,” Bender said, “and that we’re a service that is not doing anything out of step with society or out of step with Laguna Beach.”
