The Preps : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Tustin Beats University in Overtime, Moves Into First-Place Tie

Teresa Perkins’ 8-foot jump-shot with 28 seconds left in overtime gave Tustin High School a 61-59 victory over University in a Sea View League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Tustin. The victory moves the Tillers into a first-place tie with University with two league games left.

University (17-5, 6-2) had scored the final 10 points in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 59-59 on a 10-foot shot by Lorie Sato with 3 seconds left.

Perkins, who had a game-high 20 points, accounted for the only points in overtime. After taking the lead, Tustin (14-10, 6-2) stole the ball and ran out the clock.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 78, St. Paul 43--Center Kelly O’Brien scored 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and passed for 8 assists to pace host Mater Dei (18-5, 8-0). Forward Cori Martin contributed 19 points, and forward Melissa McDonald and guard Mary McCarthy added 10 each for Mater Dei. St. Paul forward Shannon Gray led all scorers with 26 points. She converted 11 of 14 free throws.

In the Century League:

Canyon 72, Villa Park 25--Keri Erkenbeck scored 20 points and had 8 rebounds for host Canyon (17-4, 8-0), which clinched a playoff spot. Christa Ramirez had 10 points and 13 assists and Sheri Rhyne had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocked shots for Canyon.

Foothill 56, El Modena 20--Center Tayna Foxe scored 13 points and had 6 rebounds for visiting Foothill (14-8, 7-1), which is a game behind Canyon in the league race. Sandi Raumussen had 9 points and team-high 10 rebounds off the bench for Foothill.

Santa Ana Valley 53, Santa Ana 38--Forward Francesca Rumps scored 32 points to lead host Santa Ana Valley (11-7, 5-3). Guard Maria Guerrero added 12 for Santa Ana Valley.

In the Olympic League:

Santa Margarita 56, Ontario Christian 46--Guard Kristen Mulligan scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 9 steals, and center Kristin Adolphson contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds to pace host Santa Margarita (11-8, 6-6).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 74, Western 58--Brea-Olinda (20-2, 8-0) clinched at least a tie for the league title at Western. Jinelle Williams scored 23 points and Tammy Blackburn had 20 for Brea, which used its press to establish a 20-13 lead after a quarter. Brea led, 39-21, at the half and was never threatened in the second half.

Savanna 57, Magnolia 20--Junior forward Jackie Boxley scored 16 points, had 7 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead host Savanna (15-7, 5-3). Senior center Lisa Rios and senior forward Cristina Radu added 12 points each for Savanna. The loss dropped Magnolia’s league record to 1-7. Savanna will play host to Valencia on Tuesday with second place in the league at stake.

Costa Mesa 48, Laguna Hills 28--Maureen Moore scored 16 points and had 5 steals, Kim Good added 12 points and Shannon Austin grabbed 9 rebounds to pace Costa Mesa (7-14, 3-5) over visiting Laguna Hills (0-8 in league play). Costa Mesa used a press to shut out Laguna Hills, 12-0, in the first quarter and to lead by as much as 21-2 in the second quarter.

Woodbridge 54, Orange 38--Guard Tami Williams scored 15 points and forward Lisa Wehren contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace Woodbridge (18-5, 8-0) at Orange (12-8, 5-3). Orange center Nicole Champion led all scorers with 16 points. Orange used a box-and-one defense through much of the game to limit Woodbridge point guard Leslie Rathbun, who was averaging 20 points per game, to 12 points. Rathbun, however, had 15 rebounds. The victory guarantees Woodbridge at least a tie for its sixth consecutive league title.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 58, Irvine 20--Jennifer Rohrig scored 17 points, Shannon Morgon 13 and Tina Ranker had 10 points and 8 assists for Mission Viejo (20-3, 8-0), which cliched at least a tie for the league championship. Mission Viejo took control early and led, 18-3, at the end of the first quarter.

El Toro 65, Capistrano Valley 49--Karie Yoshioka scored 23 points and had 9 rebounds to lead host El Toro (15-9, 6-2). Yoshioka made a 3-pointer as time ran out in the first quarter to give El Toro an 18-15 lead. The Chargers then outscored Capistrano Valley, 20-14, in the second quarter and led, 38-29, at the half.

Kristen Bevis scored 14 points and Megan Rehwoldt had 10 points also for El Toro. Rehwoldt, a sophomore, was starting only her second game this season and scored in double figures for the first time. Holly Anderson scored 18 points and Shelley Zierhut 17 for Capistrano Valley.

In the Sunrise League:

Connelly 41, St. Michael’s 30--Ranelle Kitajima scored 15 points and Charlene Wang scored 10 for host Connelly (6-2 in league play), which led, 23-12, at the half.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 62, Westminster 19--Guard Kami Bigler and center Carolyn Fox each had 8 points as Fountain Valley (16-8, 6-2) handed Westminster its eighth loss without a victory in league play. Westminster guard Julie Johnston led all scorers with 9 points. Fountain Valley shut out Westminster, 10-0, in the second quarter after a 13-10 first quarter, and pulled in front, 48-15, after three periods.

Edison 48, Marina 41--Guard Debbie Fischer scored 18 points and forward Krisden Tanabe added 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to pace host Edison (12-9, 5-3). Marina guard Melisa Sortino led all scorers with 23 points. The loss dropped Marina’s record to 17-6 overall and 5-3 in league action. Marina (17-6, 5-3) led, 20-19, at the half, but Edison outscored the visitors 18-10 in the third quarter.
