Aztecs Split Doubleheader With Florida International

The San Diego State baseball team split a doubleheader with Florida International University Sunday at Smith Field, winning the first game, 5-4, and losing the second, 4-3.

Billy Miller scored the game-winning run for the Aztecs (3-1) in the first game, coming home from second on an error in the seventh. Dave Riddle (1-0) picked up the victory.

Florida International (5-2) took a 4-0 lead in the second game and held on to win after allowing the Aztecs three unearned runs in the sixth. Paul Anderson was the winning pitcher, John Marshall (0-1) the loser.

U.S. International (2-2) split a doubleheader at UCLA, winning the first game, 4-1, and losing the second, 6-3.

USIU’s Mike Ronberg (2-0) pitched a four-hitter in the first game. Beto Rodriguez was three for four for the Gulls, including a two-run home run in the third.

USIU’s Steve Kreger hit his third home run of the season in the second game, but UCLA improved to 2-1.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU’s Tole Marinkovic defeated Robert Soneru, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to help the host Aztecs (1-4) defeat U.S. International, 7-2.

After losing the first set, Marinkovic was down, 3-1, in the second set before coming back. The Aztecs won matches at the No. 4 through 6 singles positions before sweeping doubles.

FOOTBALL

Point Loma High School’s John Louis, a 6-foot-1, 170 pound cornerback, has orally committed to San Diego State.

“I think he fits into their system very well,” Point Loma Coach Bennie Edens said.

Louis also considered Oregon, Stanford, Colorado and Arizona State.
