Prep Basketball : Girls’ Roundup : Ocean View Defeats Marina to Clinch Sunset League Championship

Center Jenny Sullivan scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds Thursday to lead the Ocean View High School girls’ basketball team to a 53-45 victory over Marina, clinching the Sunset League championship for the Seahawks.

Ocean View (24-3 overall, 9-1 in league play) fell behind, 6-0, but scored the next 12 points and never trailed thereafter. Fabiola Nunez scored eight points and had 10 rebounds for visiting Ocean View.

Guard Melisa Sortino of Marina (18-6, 5-5) was the game’s high scorer with 29 points.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 59, Huntington Beach 33--Guard Stacey Hisaka scored 21 points, 19 in the first half, to pace host Fountain Valley (18-8, 8-2). Hisaka, who had two three-pointers, played only briefly in the second half. Center Jennifer Ambrose had 15 points for Huntington Beach (4-17, 2-8).

Edison 79, Westminster 32--Forward Krisden Tanabe scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 9 assists to pace visiting Edison (13-10, 6-4). Tanabe made 12 of 13 free throws. Guard Debbie Fischer added 20 points for Edison, which nailed down third place. Westminster ended league play at 0-10.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 66, St. Joseph 41--Mater Dei fell behind, 16-11, after the first quarter but switched to a man-to-man defense from a zone and took control. Mater Dei outscored St. Joseph, 18-9, in the second quarter and led at the half, 29-25. Mater Dei outscored St. Joseph, 27-16, in the second half.

Cori Martin scored 19 points and had 21 rebounds and Kelly O’Brien had 19 points and 18 rebounds for Mater Dei (21-5, 10-0). Mary McCarthy added 13 points and six assists for Mater Dei. Dana Montoya had 14 points and Liz Fernandez had 13 for St. Joseph.

In the Century League:

Canyon 64, Santa Ana 52--Forward Keri Erkenbrack scored 23 points and had 18 rebounds for Canyon, which won the league title with a 10-0 record. Canyon (19-4 overall) outrebounded visiting Santa Ana (9-12, 2-8), 43-29. Center Gracie Lopez was Santa Ana’s high scorer with 22 points.

Foothill 44, Santa Ana Valley 39--Senior Tanya Foxe scored 16 points to lead host Foothill (15-9, 8-2). Maria Guerrero had 16 points. Francesca Rumps had 10 points for Santa Ana Valley (6-4 in league play). Canyon won the league title with a 10-0 record, Foothill was second and Santa Ana Valley third.

Villa Park 56, El Modena 35--Center Anne Salzman scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead host Villa Park (8-12, 4-6). Evonne Caouette contributed 10 points for Villa Park. El Modena (0-18, 0-10) was led in scoring by forward Tracy Williams with 12 points.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 37, Sunny Hills 35--Guard Jennifer Comstock had 19 points and forward Sommer McLane added 10 to pace visiting Fullerton. Minette Ramos led Sunny Hills with 12 points. Fullerton (14-6, 8-2) led, 22-11, at the half but scored only three points in the third quarter.

In the Olympic League:

Santa Margarita 48, Capistrano Valley Christian 15--Santa Margarita (12-9, 7-7) jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and a 26-3 margin at the half. Guard Kristen Mulligan paced Santa Margarita with 25 points, including a three-pointer, and forward Kristin Adolphson grabbed 10 rebounds.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 78, Magnolia 21--Forward Joey Anton scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds to lead visiting Brea-Olinda (23-2, 10-0). Guard Aimee McDaniel added 16 points and guard Cindy Gunn had 14 points and eight rebounds for Brea-Olinda. Magnolia finished league play at 1-9.

Valencia 62, Western 54--Forward Kristen McDonald scored 32 points and had 14 rebounds and center Christa McDonald scored 12 points and had seven rebounds to lead Valencia (16-9, 7-3), which finished in a tie for second place with Savanna. Vicki Evans scored 24 points to lead Western.

Savanna 52, Anaheim 34--Forward Jackie Boxley scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds to spark host Savanna (17-7, 7-3), which set a school record for victories, breaking its 16-victory mark in 1983. Anaheim finished at 1-9 in league play.

In the Pacifica Coast League:

Orange 60, Laguna Hills 20--Tracy Hanner had 10 points and five assists to lead host Orange (14-8, 7-3). Laurie Sallinger, Alin Perez and Edith Escamilla scored nine points each for Orange.

Costa Mesa 38, Laguna Beach 32--Kim Good, Maureen Moore and Tracy Scofield had 12 points each for Costa Mesa (8-15, 4-6). Liz Stall scored 21 for Laguna Beach.

Woodbridge 70, Trabuco Hills 47--Host Woodbridge picked up its 20th victory of the season, marking its sixth consecutive 20-win season. Lisa Wehren had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Leslie Rathbun had 20 points and 11 steals for Woodbridge (20-5, 10-0). DeeDee Sampson had 17 points for Trabuco Hills (14-8, 7-3).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 58, Dana Hills 33--Center Holly Anderson scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds, and Lisa Farr added 15 points to pace visiting Capistrano Valley (18-7, 6-4).

El Toro 56, Mission Viejo 51--Guard Carrie Yoshioka scored 14 points, had seven assists and eight steals, and center Sara Bone added 17 points to pace visiting El Toro (17-9, 8-2). Guard Tina Ranker and forward Eerie Nauta each had 11 points for Mission Viejo (21-4, 9-1).
