Linford Christie Runs World Bests at Stuttgart

Linford Christie of Britain ran the fastest times in the world this year in the 60- and 200-meter dashes at an indoor meet Sunday in Stuttgart, West Germany.

Christie led all the way in winning the 200 in 20.65 seconds, then won the 60 in 6.52, a British record.

Christie was the silver medalist in the 100 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

In the 400, Innocent Egbunike of Nigeria upset Olympic champion Steve Lewis. The winning time was 45.90, another 1989 world best. Lewis, who caught and passed Egbunike at the 200 mark then tired in the final 20 meters, finished in 45.93.

Carl Lewis won the long jump on his final attempt, leaping 26-9 3/4. It was his 58th straight win in that event.

Going into the last round, Lewis was trailing Dietmar Haaf of West Germany, who had jumped 26-1 3/4. Lewis, who fouled on his first two attempts, had a best of 25-8 1/4 through five rounds.

Other 1989 world indoor bests were turned in by Mike Okot of Kenya, who ran the 800 meters in 1:46.10, and Joaquim Cruz of Brazil, who won the 1,000 in 2:16.99.

Roger Kingdom won the 110-meter high hurdles in 7.53.
