USIU Wins in Overtime, 102-96

Demetrius Laffitte scored 10 points and Gary Williams added seven in overtime as U.S. International University defeated the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 102-96, Monday night at Golden Hall.

Trailing, 90-89, with 3:19 left in overtime, USIU outscored the Kangaroos, 12-2, with Laffitte scoring 10 of those points to give the Gulls a 101-92 lead with 50 seconds remaining.

Laffitte was 14 of 16 from the floor and six of six from the line and scored a team-high 34 points. Williams, who missed the front end of a one-and-one with four seconds remaining in regulation and the score tied, 84-84, added 31 points, including 13 of 16 from the line.

USIU (10-14) led, 39-38, at halftime, but the Kangaroos (7-14) took the biggest lead of the game, 62-52, with 13:23 remaining. The Gulls rallied with a 14-1 run that gave them a 66-63 lead midway through the second half.

Napolean Petteway scored a career-high 35 points to lead Missouri-Kansas City.

Portland basketball guard Josh Lowery, formerly of San Diego State, was suspended indefinitely by Coach Larry Steele after he was arrested for allegedly punching a woman in the face.

Lowery was suspended from San Diego State in 1987 after an altercation during a pickup game on campus. He then went to Laney Community College in Oakland before transferring to Portland State.

Lowery, who is averaging 16 points per games, faces a charge of fourth degree assault.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Angelica Jackson scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead 17th-ranked San Diego State to an 85-62 Big West Conference victory over visiting UC Irvine.

The Aztecs (20-3, 11-3) led UC Irvine (6-16, 2-11), 43-40, at the half and played without injured center Chana Perry.

The University of San Diego took a 32-24 halftime lead but could not hold on as UC Santa Barbara rallied for a 58-54 West Coast Athletic Conference victory at San Diego.
