College Roundup : Fullerton Scores School First With Tennis Victory

The Cal State Fullerton women’s tennis team defeated UC Irvine for the first time in school history, beating the Anteaters, 7-2, in a Big West Conference match Tuesday at Fullerton.

Nicole Brechtbuhl of Fullerton defeated Kathy Rose of Irvine at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and then combined with doubles’ partner Colleen Duignan to defeat Rose and Cristi Bailey, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles.

Kelli Moore, Caroline Sporer, Lanna Hollo and Duiganan, also won in singles for Fullerton.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, UC Riverside 4--Olivier Amerlink and Allen Joinio of Chapman defeated Richard Beijer and Jim Wilbanks, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles to decide the match at Chapman. Amerlink beat Nick Mateljan, 6-2, 6-2, Laurent Dropsy defeated Beijer, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Joinio defeated Greg Skaggs, 7-5, 6-3, in singles.

In doubles, Dropsy and Mick Zuercher defeated Skaggs and Kenin Klabunde, 6-4, 7-5, also for Chapman.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 7, UC Irvine 4--Mike Grahovac had three hits, including a bases-loaded double in the first inning, for Chapman (4-6) at Irvine. Leading, 5-4, in the ninth, Chapman scored two more runs. John Holshof got the victory and Jeff Haack took the loss. Ed Luna, a junior transfer from Rancho Santiago College, had three hits and three RBIs for Irvine (2-4-1).

Southern California College 16, Redlands 4--Paul Plyler hit a grand slam in the first inning and Vance Castelow hit a solo shot for visiting SCC (3-1). Joe Aversa, a junior transfer from Golden West, pitched the first five innings for the victory. Aversa also had three hits.

In Pac-10 wrestling:

Cal State Fullerton 19, Cal State Bakersfield 17--Fullerton rallied to win the final three matches at home. Ramon Diaz won at 177, Jose Flores won at 190 but Fullerton still trailed, 17-16, going into the final match. Heavyweight David Jones then beat Tom Osendorf, 2-1, for Fullerton (13-6, 5-2). Bakersfield is 9-5-1, 3-1-1.
