Roundup : Fullerton’s Women Win Basketball Title

Kelli Johnson scored 27 points, including two key baskets late in Wednesday’s game, to lead the Fullerton College women’s basketball team to a 75-68 victory over Golden West, giving Fullerton the championship of the Orange Empire Conference.

Fullerton (24-1, 8-0) led, 65-64, with 3 minutes left when Johnson hit two jumpers to put Fullerton up, 69-65. Johnson was 11 of 16 from the field and had 10 rebounds.

Claudette Jackson made 10 of 17 field goals and had 27 points for the visiting Rustlers (12-17, 6-2).

Jackson also had 17 rebounds as Golden West outrebounded Fullerton, 52-27.

In Cypress tournament baseball action:

El Camino 9, Cypress 4--El Camino scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Cypress got solo home runs from Bobby Thome in the sixth and Steve Gill in the seventh to pull to within 7-4. The Warriors scored two in the ninth. Heath Jones had two hits and three RBIs for El Camino (6-2). Doug Yates had two hits for Cypress.

In nonconference baseball:

Orange Coast 2, Los Angeles Valley 2 (11 innings)--Orange Coast tied the score with one out in the bottom of the ninth as Craig Nixon singled home Isidro Maldonado. The game was called after 11 innings because of darkness.

The Pirates (6-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nixon grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, scoring Mike Kelly. Los Angeles Valley scored twice in the third.

In nonconference softball:

Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 0--Gretchen Bock and Chris Demarzie went two for two with a double each for visiting Golden West. Demarzie also drove in a run for the Rustlers (4-2).

Rancho Santiago 7, Cerritos 3--Heather Dearden and Judy Padilla each went two for four and Yvonne Rodriguez went two for two with a walk to lead visiting Rancho Santiago. Rancho Santiago is 3-2. Cerritos falls to 0-4.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Long Beach 8, Rancho Santiago 1--Alex Venitas and Dan Manounyavong won in doubles for Rancho Santiago (1-2) in the match at Long Beach.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Santa Barbara 1--Host Golden West won by scores of 13-15, 15-5, 15-2, 15-12. Tim Johnson led Golden West (1-1) with 25 kills. Santa Barbara is 0-2.
