High School Wrestling Crowns Up for Grabs

City Section wrestling teams will complete their league seasons this weekend while their Southern Section counterparts compete in divisional finals at selected sites.

Heavily favored El Camino Real High, the defending City champion, plays host to the Valley League finals at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Poly will compete in the Central League finals at Wilson.

The Conquistadores have won four consecutive league titles and two of the past three City titles. They are 26-6 overall, 5-0 in league meets.

Greg McMurray, a 112-pound junior, is 29-2 and, along with teammates Marc Pietrolungo (119), Chris Kuhlen (126), Brian McReady (138), Scott Spindel (145) and Troy Thomas (191), is expected to contend for an individual championship.

In the Southern Section, qualifying Marmonte League wrestlers will compete in the 4-A Division meet at Edison starting at 3 this afternoon. The meet will continue Saturday.

Under the same format, the Channel League (3-A) competes at West Torrance High, the Del Rey (2-A) at Nogales, and the Frontier, Golden and San Fernando Valley leagues (1-A) are at Sierra Vista.

Westlake won the Marmonte League title in last week’s league finals.

Harvard won the San Fernando Valley League title.
