College Roundup : Errors Betray Canyons in 8-6 Loss

College of the Canyons committed five errors, which led to four runs, in an 8-6 loss to Harbor that eliminated Canyons from the Stengel tournament Friday at Cerritos College.

Canyons (3-4) had advanced to the third-round game after defeating Long Beach, 6-5, in 10 innings earlier Friday.

Adam Grant doubled in Ernie Perez with the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning. Donovan Wallace had three hits and three runs batted in for the Cougars.

In other baseball games:

Hancock 9, Moorpark 3--Hancock battered Moorpark starter Todd Gerbovaz in an eight-run second inning to win the first-round game of the Central Coast Classic tournament.

Gerbovaz (1-1) surrendered eight runs on six hits and four walks.

Moorpark’s Loyd Wood doubled to score Kris Kaelin in the second inning for Moorpark’s first run. Teammate Steve Sisco was three for four.

Greg Hobbs, a 6-5 left-hander, pitched three scoreless innings for Moorpark (3-2).

College of Idaho 11, The Master’s 4--Brad Stone pitched eight innings to record the nonconference win at Master’s.

Stone, a transfer from Glendale College, scattered seven hits and struck out four.

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 10, Chico 2--Christy Alves struck out five in a complete-game victory during pool play of the Chico tournament.

Lisa Hall, who was one for three, had a two-run double in the first inning for CSUN.

CS Northridge 6, San Francisco 0--Heather Lindstrom struck out two and surrendered three hits in a complete-game victory for Northridge (5-4).

Erin McGuire was two for three with an RBI. Patti Pearson was one for three with a two-run triple. Lisa Erickson was two for four with two stolen bases.

CS Northridge 7, Nevada Reno 0--Debbie Dickmann ran her scoreless innings streak to 25 2/3 with her third consecutive shutout.

Moorpark 23, Rio Hondo 0--Moorpark pounded out 16 hits, including home runs by Kelly Kaufman and Gina Duarte, and capitalized on seven Rio Hondo errors to post a nonconference win at home. De Dow (2-0) struck out 10 and walked three.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. El Camino, 15-7, 15-4, 9-15, 15-5--Freshman outside hitter Tim Vincent had 16 kills and Corey Davidson and Tony Zapata each had seven blocks to lead Pierce (3-0) to the Western State Conference win at Pierce.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

La Verne 69, Occidental 59--Occidental led, 53-48, midway through the second half, but center Joelle Orton, who finished with 10 points, went to the bench with four fouls and La Verne then rallied to win the SCIAC game at La Verne.

Kelly Stephenson led Occidental (8-14, 3-5) with 18 points.
