Two-Run Sixth Carries SDSU Past Irvine

Two runs in the sixth inning were the difference as San Diego State defeated visiting UC Irvine, 2-1, in baseball Friday.

With two men on and two outs, Billy Miller singled to center, and a two-base error sent both Brian Grebeck and Harry Henderson home.

SDSU is 7-2, Irvine is 2-6.

Mike Romberg struck out 11 and allowed just two hits as U.S. International University defeated UC Riverside in a nonconference game in Riverside. Romberg improved to 4-0. Kevin Tahan homered in the sixth for the Gulls (5-4). Riverside dropped to 3-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD defeated 15th-ranked Trinity (Texas), 6-3, in the Brigham Young Round Robin in Provo, Utah. USD won five of six singles matches. Jennifer Larking defeated Jane Holdren, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for the Toreras. USD collected a victory at No. 2 doubles as Sakolwan Kacharoen and Jill Greenwood defeated Michelle Bogaard and Katrina Crawford, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). USD will play Minnesota today in the final match of the trip.

San Diego State (2-2) lost to host Cal Berkeley (3-2), 7-2. Aztec Kristen Hill defeated Alicia Finnerman, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Jessica Buss and Sondra Mitchell defeated Finnerman and Lisa Albano, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fonda DeCree scored 15 points as USIU defeated Southern Utah State College, 74-63, in USIU’s Great West Classic at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

USIU meets Portland State in the tournament championship tonight at 8.

MEN’S TENNIS

David Stewart of the University of San Diego and Voram Baron of USIU advanced to the finals of the San Diego Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament in the No. 1-2 singles division.

Stewart defeated Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo’s Tim Presenius in one semifinal, 6-2, 7-5, and Baron defeated the USD’s Jose Luis Noriega by default.

In the No. 5-6 singles, Rick Matheson and Dan Mattera advanced to an all-USD final. Matheson defeated Cal Poly-SLO’s Max Allman in one semifinal, 6-1, 6-1, and Mattera defeated SDSU’s Bill Kearsley in the other, 6-1, 6-2.

TRACK

San Diego State’s Pat Thiss had an NCAA qualifying throw of 203-feet-1 in the hammer at the Mesa Track and Field Invitational at Mesa College. Grossmont’s Ken Marquez won the javelin throw with at 171-11. Mesa College’s Barry Oliver won the 3,200-meter race in 9 minutes 38 seconds. Competitors were from SDSU, Mesa, Grossmont, UC San Diego and the Marines; team scores were not kept.
