From Times staff and wire service reports

Steelers center Mike Webster, the last veteran of the team’s four Super Bowl victories, announced his retirement from the National Football League, saying he could not imagine playing for any team but Pittsburgh.

“After wearing the black and gold for so long, I just couldn’t look at any other jersey and imagine myself wearing it,” Webster said Tuesday night. “I’m at peace with my decision. It’s the right thing to do. I wanted it to end here in Pittsburgh.”

Webster, 36, visited Kansas City last week and was considering playing for the Chiefs next season. He said he telephoned Chiefs offensive line coach Howard Mudd to tell him about his decision.

Webster, offensive captain for the last nine seasons, was known to his teammates as “Iron Mike” for the strength he developed from workouts that could leave younger players gasping. At the end of last season, Webster said he hoped to return for a 16th season with the Steelers, but the team was not interested.
