Tennis Roundup : U.S., France Play April 7-9 in San Diego

The United States will play France in the second round of the Davis Cup April 7-9 at the San Diego Sports Arena, the U.S. Tennis Assn. announced Thursday.

The U.S. team defeated Paraguay, 5-0, in the first round, while France beat Israel, 4-1.

Captain Tom Gorman said he probably will use John McEnroe and Andre Agassi in singles, and the doubles team of Ken Flach and Robert Seguso, who have never lost a Davis Cup match. McEnroe has a 36-3 Davis Cup record.

McEnroe had 11 aces in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Christian Bergstrom of Sweden in the second round of the $291,000 Lyon Grand Prix tournament at Lyon, France.

Top-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland rallied to beat Erik Winogradsky of France, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden routed Tarik Benehabiles of France, 6-1, 6-1.

The top-seeded Agassi overcame Jim Courier, 6-3, 7-6, on the eighth match point in a battle of 18-year-olds at the $602,500 U.S. Pro Indoor Tennis Championships.

Second-seeded Boris Becker trounced David Pate, 6-1, 6-1; third-seeded Tim Mayotte beat Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-4; 10th-seeded Christo van Rensburg of South America eliminated No. 7 Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4; No. 11 Seguso upended No. 6 Kevin Curren, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, and No. 4 Mikael Pernfors of Sweden beat Roger Smith of the Bahamas, 6-1, 6-3.

Martina Navratilova needed only 49 minutes to rout Isabelle Demongeot of France, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round of a $200,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Oakland.

Gigi Fernandez of Puerto Rico beat Gretchen Majers, 6-3, 6-4.
