SportScope : Loyola Nine, Winner After 7 Losses, Hopes for Better Times

The Loyola Marymount baseball team, which broke a seven-game losing streak this week, will be at home for a three-game series with Southern Utah State starting at 2 p.m. today. It will play a doubleheader at noon Saturday. The Lions play Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton. Loyola (3-7-1) broke its losing streak Sunday at Berkeley when Kalani Bush pitched an 8-0 shutout against Cal. They followed that with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory Tuesday over UCLA that featured Brian Turang’s first home run.

The Catalina Marathon/10-K will be be run March 11-12 starting at 9 a.m at the Avalon Casino. The marathon March 12 will start at 7 a.m. at Two Harbors. Because of the difficulty in the terrain, only runners who can prove that they have run two marathons or one 50-mile race in the last six months will be allowed to participate. After upsetting top-ranked Hawaii to gain a share of the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. lead, the UCLA men’s volleyball team plays at Cal State Long Beach tonight at 7:30. UCLA defeated the Rainbow Warriors in five games last week. The Bruins are tied with Stanford at 6-1 in the WIVA.

Ascot Park kicks off its racing campaign tonight and Saturday night with the World of Outlaws Midwinter Championships. The winged sprint cars get under way with the 20-lap feature tonight at 8. The 30-lap race Saturday starts at 8. The two-day event has a purse of $52,000.

Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball and Over-the-Line is accepting applications for teams. The fee for slo teams is $160 and teams are guaranteed at least three games in each tournament at sites in Orange and Los Angeles counties. All tournaments are finished in one day. Men’s divisions in C, D and Masters are available. In over-the-line the cost is $33 per team and each is guaranteed at least four games in each tournament.
