THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : Chapman’s Bird Shuts Out Pomona, 2-0

David Bird pitched a 6-hitter and Chapman College defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0, Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball opener for both teams at Pomona.

Bird (2-3), a former Sonora High School standout, struck out six and walked one.

Chapman (7-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run.

David Allison walked and reached second on a fielder’s choice. Kenny Briggs then hit a ground ball that went through the legs of second baseman Miccal Jackson. Allison scored on the play.

The score remained 1-0 until the ninth, when the Panthers’ Jeff Kidwiler doubled home Jody Garcia. Kidwiler had two hits in the game.

Brett Lachemann took the loss, although he gave up just five hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out five and allowed only the unearned run.

In nonconference baseball:

UC Santa Barbara 6, Southern California College 1--Joe Aversa (2-1) went nine innings but took the loss for visiting SCC (6-4). UC Santa Barbara is 8-7.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 3-1, San Diego State 2-0 --Laura Papadakis singled home Shelly Mahon with two outs in the ninth to give Chapman (6-2) the victory in the first game, which went nine innings. Jacki Blake (2-1) threw a two-hitter, striking out nine, for the victory in the second game.

In the National Indoor Team Tennis Championships in Louisville, Ky.:

UC Irvine 5, USC 4--With the score tied, 4-4, Irvine’s No. 1 doubles of Mike Briggs and Trevor Kronemann rallied to defeat Kent Seton and Murphy Jensen, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, for the Anteaters (4-4) in a quarterfinal match. Briggs and Kronemann trailed, 4-3, in the second set, but broke service to pull even. Kronemann also defeated Byron Black, 6-3, 7-6. The Anteaters will play the University of South Carolina today in the semifinals.
