College Basketball : Glendale Sets Playoff Agenda After 2 Overtimes

Glendale College outscored Golden West, 13-7, in the second overtime to post a 94-88 win in double overtime in a first-round Southern California regional junior college basketball playoff game at Golden West on Saturday.

Glendale’s Bruce Heicke made two free throws with four seconds left to tie the score, 75-75, at the end of regulation and keep Glendale’s season alive.

Markus Muller-Stach led Golden West with 25 points, Alex Kreps had 21 and Elbert Davis 14.

Golden West ends the season, 20-12. Glendale (19-11) advances to play at El Camino on Wednesday.

In other regional first-round games:

Compton 67, Moorpark 48--Moorpark made only 19 of 51 shots from the field and committed 13 turnovers in defeat.

Gerald McDonald scored a game-high 30 points for Compton (21-10), which will play at Riverside in the second round Wednesday.

Moorpark (16-15) never led after the opening basket. The Raiders turned the ball over nine times before intermission and trailed, 33-22.

Compton’s Roy Williams, who scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds, scored eight unanswered points to open the second half.

Freshman Roger Thomas scored a career-high 22 points to lead Moorpark.

Cal Lutheran 81, Cal Baptist 78--Charles Jackson made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining as the Kingsmen thwarted a late Cal Baptist charge in the Golden State Athletic Conference finale at Cal Lutheran (11-17, 5-9).

Cal Lutheran senior guard Steve deLaveaga, playing in his final college game, scored a game-high 25 points to finish his career with a school-record 2,549 points.

WOMEN

Cal State Northridge 74, UC Riverside 44--Behind a 22-point, nine-rebound, five-assist effort from Bridgette Ealy, the Lady Matadors routed the Highlanders at the Riverside gym.

Northridge, 20-7 overall, finished the CCAA season at 8-4. The Lady Matadors will face Chapman, the only conference team to defeat them twice this season, Thursday night in the opening round of the CCAA tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.

Patty Held, who scored 35 points for Riverside in its win at Northridge three weeks ago, was held to eight this time. Riverside finished 7-19 overall, 2-10 in the CCAA.

Paula Lucas scored 14 points and Vicki Mallett added 13 for Northridge.

Cal Baptist 82, Cal Lutheran 68--Cal Baptist’s 7-0 run early in the second half turned a one-point edge into an insurmountable lead in the final Golden State Athletic Conference game for both schools.

Cal Lutheran, which trailed at the half, 38-37, finished the season 7-18 overall, 4-8 in conference play. Cal Baptist is 19-10, 8-4.

Brenda Lee led Cal Lutheran with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Heidi Griffith and Dani Elton each had 14 points.
