In the other boys’ Division I semifinal:

Poway 52, Mt. Carmel 46--After a two-year layoff, Poway returned to the section championship game with a big fourth-quarter rally at Mira Mesa High. The Titans trailed, 36-33, after three quarters but missed only one field goal and one free throw the rest of the way. Adam Jones, Gabby Awbrey, Jay Blankenbeckler and John Culbertson scored four points apiece during Poway’s fourth-quarter run.

The Titans (22-4) won section 3-A championships in 1984, 1985 and 1986 with a lineup that featured several all-county performers, including current University of Arizona star Jud Buechler.

“This year’s team has some talent but nothing like the team that won three in a row,” Poway Coach Neville Saner said. “It feels to be back in the finals without the big-time players.”

Mt. Carmel (18-9) didn’t make it easy, though. The Sundevils made 18 of 21 free throws and led most of the way. But, ultimately, Poway’s rebound edge (20-10) took its toll, and the Titans rallied.
