Prep Roundup : Laguna Hills Shuts Out San Clemente

Margo Melendrez pitched a three-hit shutout and played a part in all of Laguna Hills High School runs to lead the Hawks to a 5-0 victory over San Clemente in a nonleague softball game Friday at Loara.

Melendrez had two hits and four runs batted in and also scored a run. Toran Lee had two hits and scored a run for Laguna Hills. It was the season opener for both teams.

In other season-opening nonleague softball games:

La Habra 2, Valencia 0--Laura Corson pitched a one-hitter and contributed a hit, an RBI and a stolen base for host La Habra.

Irvine 1, Mater Dei 1 (darkness)--The game was called after 15 innings at Heritage Park. Irvine scored in the sixth, when Diana Soto singled in Jennifer Brundage. Mater Dei tied the score in the seventh, when Jennifer Grootegoed singled and later scored on a error.

In nonleague golf:

Millikan 209, Edison 215--Edison’s Brandon Loomis and Millikan’s Pat Shriver both shot two-over par 38 in a nonleague match at SeaCliff Country Club. Edison is 0-1, Millikan 2-0.

Estancia 189, Palm Springs 209--Austin Maki shot a two-under, 33 for Estancia (2-0) at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.
