SDSU Upsets Ball State in Volleyball

The San Diego State men’s volleyball team upset a top-10 team for the second time in a week by defeating No. 8 Ball State, 15-13, 16-14, 12-15, 15-13, Monday night at Peterson Gym.

Caesar Mata (16 kills) and Mike Schlegel (14 kills) led the Aztecs.

Last week, Penn State, ranked ninth in the nation, lost to the Aztecs (7-8).

San Diego State is ranked 10th in the country.

MEN’S TENNIS

Led by the singles play of John Noble and Stefano Demarchi, Ball State defeated host UC San Diego, 8-0.

Noble defeated Francois Monnar, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Demarchi defeated Sig Huber, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2.

UCSD (3-6) is ranked fifth in Division III. Ball State is a Division I school.

Point Loma Nazarene College (1-8) lost to visiting Western Michigan, 7-2, in a nonconference match.

The Crusaders’ victories were turned in at No. 1 singles, where Hans Hoegstedt defeated Greg Winchester, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 3 singles, where Dick Eastley defeated Karl Krazter, 6-2, 6-1.

MEN’S GOLF

University of San Diego finished eighth after the first day of competition at the 13-team Cal State Sacramento Invitational at Rancho Murietta golf course.

USD, led by Geoffrey Dean and Rick Schultz, enters today’s final round with a team score of 623, 30 strokes behind first-place Cal State Stanislaus.

Dean shot rounds of 75 and 74 and Schultz rounds of 78 and 74. USD will compete on the South course today.
