Prep Baseball Roundup : El Dorado’s Power Stops Irvine, 7-5

Bruce Petillo hit a grand slam and El Dorado High School had three home runs to defeat Irvine, 7-5, in a quarterfinal game of the Loara tournament Tuesday at El Dorado.

The Golden Hawks led, 3-2, in the fifth when Petillo, a senior catcher, connected to give El Dorado a 7-2 lead. David Goldenstein pitched 4 2/3 innings and took the loss for Irvine (2-1).

Matt Luke and Dave Moore also hit home runs for El Dorado (3-0). Luke had two hits and scored two runs. Moore had two hits and two RBIs. Travis Dowdell pitched the first five innings for the victory.

El Dorado plays El Toro in one semifinal Thursday.

In other championship-round games:

El Toro 8, Marina 7--Chris Sauritch drove in five runs to lift the Chargers (3-0) into a semifinal meeting with El Dorado. Sauritch hit a three-run home run in the second inning and added a two-run single in the fourth, when El Toro scored three times to take an 8-6 lead. Marina scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but Rob Johnson shut down the Vikings the rest of the way, pitching the final 4 2/3 to earn the victory.

Servite 9, Kennedy 6--Servite jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning at Glover Stadium in Anaheim. Ed Crippen of Servite (5-0) had two hits, including a double. He scored two runs and knocked in another. Teammate Whit Haydon also had two hits, scored twice and had an RBI. Starter George Velasquez picked up his second victory, and Cliff Mierendorf earned his second save. Servite will play Lakewood in the tournament semifinals 3 p.m. Thursday at Glover Field. In consolation-round games:

Riverside North 2, Anaheim 0--Anaheim (1-2) was held to three hits at Glover Stadium. North scored two runs in the fifth.

Newbury Park 6, Sunny Hills 5 (8 innings)--Benny Rodriguez had two hits, scored two runs and Jason Sugarman had two hits and two RBIs for Sunny Hills (2-3).

Los Amigos 6, Loara 2--Art Vargas hit a solo home run and Jim Monahan and Shane Rumney each had two hits for Los Amigos (1-2) at Loara. Only one of Los Amigos’ runs was earned as Loara (0-3) committed eight errors.

Dana Hills 9, Magnolia 7--Mike Robertson pitched three innings for the victory and had a hit and two RBIs for host Dana Hills (2-1). Jay Johnson had three hits and two RBIs and Mark Kania had a hit and two RBIs for Dana Hills. Magnolia is 1-2.

Diamond Bar 4, Villa Park 2--Richie Fry scored two runs and drove in two runs for Diamond Bar (2-1).

Laguna Hills 5, University 3--Host Laguna Hills (2-1) was paced by Jason Thompson, who had three hits and an RBI. Ron Kortman had two doubles and had an RBI for the winners.

Fountain Valley 8, Katella 7--Steve Lancaster won it with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for host Fountain Valley. It was his third RBI. Tom Mendoza had three hits for Fountain Valley (2-1).

Western 1, San Clemente 0--Doug McConathy hit a fourth-inning home run and Eric Dowell pitched six innings in relief to pick up the victory for Western (1-2).

Santiago 4, Cypress 4 (7 innings, darkness)--Sean McCorry hit a solo home run for Santiago (1-3-1). Cypress is 0-1-2.

In the Colton Tournament:

Canyon 3, San Gorgonio 2--San Gorgonio pitchers gave up 11 walks at Canyon. Canyon’s Mike Casagranda pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with no walks. Dan Puskas of Canyon walked three times and had a single, coming around to score three times. He walked in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.

In nonleague games:

Whittier Christian 4, Norwalk 2--Steve Little drove in a run with a double and pitched the first five innings for the victory at Norwalk.

Scott Jordan and Brett Jordan each had two hits for Whittier Christian (1-2), which scored two runs in the third inning and single runs in the fifth and the seventh.

Bolsa Grande 7, Warren 3--Chip Kovachz had two hits, three RBIs, and stole a base for visiting Bolsa Grande (3-0). Rick Tantardini had two hits and an RBI and Tobi Ulemek had two hits and two steals, including one of home, for Bolsa Grande. Warren is 1-1.

Rancho Alamitos 5, Trabuco Hills 0--Ryan Flanagan pitched a three-hitter and struck out six for Rancho Alamitos (3-0) at Trabuco Hills (1-1). Tim Mora hit a solo home run and added an RBI for Rancho Alamitos.
