College Roundup : Late Rally Lifts Valley Past Santa Monica, 8-6

Valley College scored twice in the eighth inning to surge past Santa Monica, 8-6, in a Western State Conference baseball game Tuesday at Valley.

With the scored tied, 6-6, Eric Vargas singled to score John Stephens and Mike Suarez scored on a throwing error to give the Monarchs the final margin of victory.

Left-hander Joey Kane (4-2) pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks for Valley, which improved to 16-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play.

Trailing, 2-1, in the fifth, Valley scored five runs without the benefit of a hit. Santa Monica starter Chico Garcia walked five batters and threw a wild pitch. Santa Monica (3-3 in conference play) also committed an error in the inning.

Valley’s Ray Sabado was hitless in five at-bats to snap a 15-game hitting streak.

Harbor 12, Canyons 11--Canyons blew a 9-5 lead in a nonconference game at Harbor.

Canyons (9-9) loaded the bases with none out in the top of the eighth but failed to score as Scott Roth grounded out, Ross Linstrom struck out and Gary Morgan grounded out.

Morgan hit a three-run home run in the second inning. Don Pedersen belted a solo home run in the fifth.

Randy Cooper was three for five, Peter Washington was three for four and Ernie Perez was three for five for Canyons.

Mission 4, East L.A. 3--Art Monreal’s two-run double highlighted a three-run seventh inning as Mission (5-10, 3-3) held on to post a Southern California Athletic Conference victory at Pierce.

Monreal was two for four, including a double and a single, with two runs batted in. Monreal is 10 for 14 with four doubles and a home run in the past four games.

Jose Garcia scattered eight hits and struck out four for Mission.

Cal State Northridge 5, UC Riverside 5--Darkness forced the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game to be halted midway through the 11th inning at Northridge.

Northridge (11-6, 3-5) scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie the score, 3-3, and added two more in the eighth to forge a 5-5 tie.

Northridge starter Fili Martinez struck out 10 and walked three in pitching the distance. The teams meet again Thursday and Saturday at Riverside and Friday at CSUN.

Pierce 18, Cuesta 4--Pete Dragaloski limited Cuesta to one earned run through seven inning in a WSC game at Cuesta.

Kevin Johnson was three for five with five RBIs for Pierce (6-8, 2-3). Pierce had 18 hits in all against Cuesta (0-5 in conference play).

GOLF

Cal State Northridge shot 633 to finish fourth in the University of San Diego Invitational at Carmel Mountain Ranch.

Roger Metz of Northridge shot a two-round total of 155 to finish seventh. Teammates Pat Boyd and Scott Humphrey each shot 160 and Tim Hogarth carded a 162.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 9, West L.A. 0--Pierce dropped only one singles game in breezing to a WSC victory at Pierce.

Sang Kim defeated Yang Paek, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles match. In the No. 2 singles, Mason Harris swept Mike Maryland, 6-0, 6-0.

Kim and Sudantha Soysa defeated Paek and Maryland in the top-seeded doubles match.

The Brahmas improved to 8-0, 7-0 in conference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Concordia 6, Cal Lutheran 3--Merja Hellsten defeated Amy Bodden in the No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), but her Cal Lutheran teammates were unable to follow her lead in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.

Elizabeth Bosley and Liz Eicheley combined to defeat Dianne Bland and Gina Ghent, 8-3, for Cal Lutheran’s only doubles victory. Cal Lutheran is 3-5 overall.
