The Preps : Roundup : San Clemente Girls Win Big in Track Meet

Four girls scored double victories, including Terry Smythers in the mile (5:35.0) and two-mile (11:57.2), to help San Clemente High School dominate a nonconference triangular track and field meet with Mayfair and Laguna Beach at San Clemente.

The final score was San Clemente 116, Mayfair 19, Laguna Beach 16.

Freshman Katrina Bohn, was a double winner in the sprints, running a 12.9 in the 100 meters and a 27.2 in 200 meters. Stacie Netherby scored won the 300-meter low hurdles (52.3) and the 100-meter low hurdles (17.6), and Debbie Weise threw the shot 32-4 1/2 and the discus 103-2 to win those events. The Tritons are 3-0.

In Angelus League girls’ track:

Mater Dei 79, Bishop 39--Melissa McDonald won the 440 and 220-yard runs and the high jump for the Monarchs (2-1, 1-0) in the league opener.

In Garden Grove League girls’ track:

Los Amigos 77, Pacifica 48--Shannon Cook won the high jump and the 110-yard hurdles for Los Amigos (2-1, 1-1).

Kennedy 66, La Quinta 54--Michelle Harris won the 100 (12.1), 220 (28.75) and the long jump (13-8 1/2) and anchored the winning 440 relay team to lead the Fighting Irish at La Quinta.

In nonleague girls’ track:

El Modena 82, Saddleback 45--Senior Olive Langi threw the shot put 38-3 to break Saddleback’s school record in her track and field debut. Penina Masanai set the old record of 35-8 in 1981.

Sonora 92, Anaheim 35--Freshman Casie Lozano won the 100-yard dash, the high jump and the long jump and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team for Sonora at Anaheim.

Valencia 64, Marina 63--It came down to the mile relay, and Marina did not field one. Heather Killeen won the two-mile and mile runs for Valencia (3-0).

Villa Park 67, Sunny Hills 59--Susannah Thrasher won the 880-yard run, and the mile run and anchored the mile relay team for Villa Park (2-1).

Woodbridge 75, Irvine 57, University 27--Kaci Kaffer of Woodbridge won the 300-meter low hurdles (46.7), the 400-meter run (58.2) and was a member of two winning relay teams, the 4x100 (50.6) and the 4x400 (4:08.0).

In girls’ nonleague track:

The Mission Viejo 4x100 meter relay team ran a 50.7, and Kristen Okura won the discus with a throw of 114-8 1/2 inches in a non-scoring meet.

In Angelus League boys’ track:

Mater Dei 86, Bishop Amat 44--Mike Nielsen won the half-mile and mile runs for Mater Dei (1-2, 1-0). Jason Uhl won the shotput with a toss of 50-11 1/2.

In Garden Grove League boys’ track:

Los Amigos 78, Pacifica 49--Sal Sabala won the mile and two-mile runs to pace Los Amigos (2-1, 1-1) at home. Pacifica is 0-2.

Kennedy 104, La Quinta 17--Junior James Chun won the 220 (23.07) and the long jump (20-4) for Kennedy.

Woodbridge 77, Irvine 59, University 34--Muniz Louie of Woodbridge won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (39.4), 400 meter run (50.4), and the 110 high hurdles (15.2) and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay (3:29.1).

In nonleague boys’ track:

El Modena 75, Saddleback 61--Chris Johnson threw the discuss 147-1 1/2, and teammate Mike Terry won the 880 and 440-yard runs for El Modena (3-0) at home.

El Toro 98, Trabuco Hills 34--David Fair won the 400 and 200-yard runs, and the high jump for El Toro (3-0).

Millikan 67, Edison 60--Edison’s Greg Thurston won the shot put and discus with throws of 52-3 inches and 150-10 inches at Millikan.

San Clemente 108, Mayfair 44 1/2, Laguna Beach 17 1/2--Tim Martin ran a 10.45 in the 100 meters and a 21.94 in the 200 meters to pace San Clemente at San Clemente.

Sonora 82, Anaheim 45--Marcus Garrett was a quadruple winner for Sonora in a meet at Anaheim. He won the 100-yard and 220-yard runs and ran legs on winning relays teams.

Valencia 68, Marina 68--Marina won six events and Valencia 10, but the Vikings had a little more depth and picked up enough second and third-place finishes to tie the meet at Valencia (2-0-1).

Villa Park 105, Sunny Hills 30--Mike Raum threw the discuss 140-4 for the win, and Nick Freck won the 100 and 220-yard runs for Villa Park (3-0).

In another nonleague meet:

Eddie Lavelle won the 1,600 meters (4:22.4) and the 800 (1:58.9) to lead Corona del Mar at home. Joe White won the 100 (11.0), the 200 (22.5) and anchored the winning 400 relay to lead Capistrano Valley in a non-scoring meet at Corona del Mar.

In Sea View League tennis:

Corona del Mar 10, University 8--The doubles teams of Rich Han-Doug Schulein and Rob Atkin-David Bain swept their three matches for Corona del Mar.

In Garden Grove League tennis:

Bolsa Grande 10, Los Amigos 8--Bolsa Grande’s No. 1 doubles team of Kha Dang and Joe Toan swept their sets, 7-6, 6-0, 6-2. Bolsa Grande is 5-1, 2-0.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

El Toro 11, Huntington Beach 7--Suri Appa and Dave Mullarkey, El Toro’s No. 1 doubles team, swept their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, for host El Toro (7-0).

Sunny Hills 18, Cypress 0--Glenn Henderson and Nathan Winn won their doubles matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Sunny Hills, 5-1.

Sonora 18, Brea Olinda 0--Kevin Fleet and Mauricio Mejia swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, for Sonora (7-1) at Sonora.

In South Coast League boys’ golf:

San Clemente 219, Irvine 210--Tony Snow shot a four-over-par 40 to lead Irvine (3-1, 2-0).

In nonleague boys’ golf:

Brea Olinda 206, Mission Viejo 237--Kevin Claborn shot a 35 for Brea (7-0) at the Mission Viejo Country Club.

El Modena 168, El Dorado 179--Denny Hathaway of El Modena shot a one-under-par 30 at Ridgeline Country Club.

Estancia 198, Trabuco Hills 219--Austin Maki was the medalist for Estancia with a 37 in a match played at Coto de Caza Country Club. Ken Calvert and Mike Joyner had 38s for the winners.

Laguna Beach 215, Orange Lutheran 215--Mike Herrick and Mike Francis were the medalists. shooting two-over par 36s for Orange Lutheran (0-3-1).

Servite 204, Western Christian 262--Jason Van der steen was the medalist with a three-over-par 39 for Servite (3-1-1).

Valencia 403, Los Amigos 503--Chris Tidland of Valencia (4-0) was the medalist, shooting a par 72 for 18 holes at Alta Vista Country Club. It was Valencia’s 41st victory in a row.

In nonleague volleyball:

Mission Viejo 3, Estancia 2--Mission Viejo came back to win 11-15, 9-15, 15-17, 15-5, 15-5. Jim Butchko had 20 kills and eight blocks for host Mission Viejo.

San Clemente 3, La Quinta 2--San Clemente won the match at La Quinta, 13-15, 15-6, 15-12, 15-17, 15-8.
