College Roundup : Peters’ Hitting Streak Hits 22 Games; Titans Win 16th

Rex Peters of Cal State Fullerton had a single in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 22 games as the Titans defeated Gonzaga, 12-4, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Titan Field.

Peters, a senior, was two for three and has hit safely in all of Fullerton’s games. Brent Mayne hit in a school-record 38 consecutive games last season. Fullerton (16-6) scored nine runs on 10 hits in the second inning. Mayne and Dave Staton had two hits each in the inning. Staton also had two RBIs.

Danny DeVille (3-0) pitched the first five innings for the victory. Gonzaga is 5-2.

In a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader:

California Lutheran 5-2, Southern California College 3-6--Paul Plyler hit three home runs in the games, including a grand slam in the ninth inning of the second one to break a 2-2 tie. Jim Dedrick pitched a complete game for SCC (14-11, 4-2). Cal Lutheran is 13-6, 6-1.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 4-5, San Diego State 2-0--Gina Gonzales, Missy Coombes and Carey Hess had two hits each in the first game for host Fullerton (17-4, 7-1). Ann Van Dortrecht allowed two hits as she pitched her fifth shutout this season for Fullerton.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Miami 2--Mark Kaplan won his 12th consecutive match to help lead host Irvine, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, over 12th-ranked Miami. Kaplan defeated Conny Falk, 6-2, 6-3.
