Prep Roundup : County Players Pitch Two Perfect Games, Two No-Hitters in Softball

Orange County prep softball pitchers dominated most of Tuesday’s play as there were two perfect games and two no-hitters.

Margo Melendrez of Laguna Hills pitched a perfect game, and Bobbi Cloyd and Jill Bishop combined on a five-inning perfect game for La Quinta. El Dorado’s Keri Lucas and Stephaine Smith of Garden Grove pitched no-hitters.

Laguna Hills 4, Magnolia 0--Melendrez pitched a perfect game, the first in her career, for host Laguna Hills. Melendrez (6-2), who had a five-inning no-hitter earlier this season, had nine strikeouts for Laguna Hills (9-3). She also was three for four with three stolen bases and a run. Torin Lee had three hits and Tina Gastel had two hits and two runs batted in for Laguna Hills.

La Quinta 16, Rancho Alamitos 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Cloyd (9-2) and Bishop combined on their perfect game at La Quinta (10-3) in the Garden Grove League opener for both teams. Cloyd pitched the first four innings and Bishop the final one. La Quinta had 15 hits. Chemaine Ramirez had a three-run home run in the first, Carly Norton had four hits and four RBIs, and Kara Hendricksen had three hits for La Quinta.

El Dorado 1, Fullerton 0 (8 innings)--Lucas (8-2) pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts for host El Dorado (8-2). El Dorado’s Rachel Herzog scored from third on a dropped third strike in the eighth.

Garden Grove 2, Los Amigos 0--Smith (7-5) pitched a no-hitter, her first of the season, and had 10 strikeouts to lead visiting Garden Grove (7-5, 1-0) in another Garden Grove League game. Smith walked three, and Garden Grove made two errors. Garden Grove scored two runs in the sixth. Becky Eggers had an RBI single to score Brandie Novack for the first run. Michelle Covin had a double to score Eggers.

In nonleague softball:

Irvine 6, Trabuco Hills 0--Jennifer Brundage (6-5) pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts for visiting Irvine (6-5). She allowed a one-out single in the seventh. Brundage also had two hits, including a home run. Brandi Armstrong had a two-run single in the fourth to give Irvine a 3-0 lead.

Villa Park 12, Sonora 3--Michele D’Amato hit a three-run home run in the second and had an RBI single for host Villa Park (6-8), which had 12 hits. Steph Wills had three hits, and Robyn Kerfoot had two hits, an RBI and scored a run. Chris Redman (3-4) pitched a two-hitter for the victory.

Woodbridge 4, Capistrano Valley 0--Lisa Wehren (5-2) pitched her third shutout of the season, a three-hitter, for host Woodbridge (7-4). Mary Dugard and Wehren opened the fourth with singles and Alison Ward followed with a three-run home run. Ward also scored the final run in the sixth.

Sunny Hills 2-5, Valencia 1-0 (first game eight innings, tiebreaker)--After seven scoreless innings in the first game at Sunny Hills, Valencia scored a run in the top of the eighth, using the international tiebreaker system, in which each team puts a runner on second base to start its half of the inning.

But in the bottom of the eighth, Sunny Hills pitcher Amy Huett doubled in the tying run, then scored the winning run on a single by Erin McKenney. Huett gave up four hits in her complete-game victory. In the second game, Stacy Thurber pitched a four-hit shutout for Sunny Hills (7-2).

In Century League golf:

El Modena 214, Villa Park 224--Eric Casey and Denny Hathaway of El Modena and Paul Mohler of Villa Park each shot four-over 40 on the Orange Course at Green River.

In Orange League golf:

Savanna 205, Western 210--Senior Scott Paul shot a one-under 34 for Savanna at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim. Freshman Scott Ohls shot a 38 also for Savanna.

In nonleague golf:

Corona del Mar 202, Huntington Beach 204--Jonah Tatch of Corona del Mar shot a three-over 38 to lead Corona del Mar at Newport Beach Country Club. Travis Brasher shot a 39 for Huntington Beach. Corona del Mar is 5-0.

Edison 292, Newport Harbor 294 (12 holes)--Tom Freeman shot a three-over 52 for Newport Harbor and Levi Kennedy shot 53 for Edison. The match was stopped after 12 holes because of darkness.

Brea-Olinda 206, Los Altos 227--Kevin Claborn and Jeff Banks shot even-par 37 to lead Brea-Olinda at Imperial Golf Course.

Trabuco Hills 203, Los Amigos 251--Justin Harrison shot an even-par 36 for Trabuco Hills at Coto de Caza Golf Course. Mark Christensen shot 37 for Trabuco Hills.

In Sunset League tennis:

Marina 11, Huntington Beach 7--Marina (5-5, 1-0) won five of nine doubles sets, including the team of Noli Zosa and Jeff Money who swept, at Huntington Beach. The Oilers (5-5, 0-1) were led by Andy Stewart, who swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

In Garden Grove League tennis:

Bolsa Grande 12, Kennedy 6--Phong Nguyen won, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, to lead visiting Bolsa Grande (6-2, 3-0).

In the Olympic League:

Santa Margarita 17, Whittier Christian 1--Santa Margarita (6-2, 3-1) won at La Habra Tennis Center.

In nonleague tennis:

Corona del Mar 18, Foothill 0--Rob Atkin won, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Rich Han and Doug Schulein won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for visiting Corona del Mar (6-2).

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 119, Ocean View 21--Daren Ham won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.29) and 200 individual medley (2:18.9) for the Barons at Fountain Valley.

In Sunset League girls’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 113, Ocean View 50--Tiffany Roberts won the 200 individual medley (2:26.68) and 100 butterfly (1:07.67) for the Barons at Ocean View.

In nonleague volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Dana Hills 0--Scott Drake had 13 kills to help host Huntington Beach (5-0) to a 15-5, 15-3, 15-8 sweep.

University 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Stefan Mumaw had nine kills and Pat Ferrell added seven for University (3-0) in a 15-0, 15-7, 15-1 victory.

Edison 3, Irvine 0--Setter Aaron Boone had 27 assists and three service aces, John Hawks had eight digs and Darren Lance contributed 11 kills and three aces in Edison’s 15-4, 15-2, 15-13 victory. Edison is 5-0; Irvine is 0-3.

Newport Harbor 3, Marina 0--Chris Lee had 16 kills for Newport Harbor (1-2) in its 15-11, 15-5, 15-13 victory at home. Marina is 3-1.
