College Baseball : Canyons’ Fast Start Leads to 9-6 Win Over Bakersfield

Chris Joy hit a grand slam in the first inning and sophomore right-hander Leif Christoffersen gave up one run in three innings of relief to lead College of the Canyons to a 9-6 victory over Bakersfield in a Western State Conference game Saturday at Canyons.

Joy’s shot gave Canyons a 5-2 lead after the first and the Cougars added a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings and two in the eighth.

Freshman left-hander Mike Teich gave up five runs on 10 hits and struck out four in six innings to pick up the win. Christoffersen struck out five and gave up three hits in three innings to earn the save.

The Cougars (14-11, 7-2) had five hits and committed three errors.

In other games:

Pierce 7, Santa Barbara City 6--The Brahmas rallied for two runs in the seventh and scored the winning run on Billy Morris’ single to right in the eighth in the WSC game at Pierce.

With the score tied in the eighth, Tony Dello walked and advanced to second on Kevin Johnson’s sacrifice. Dello scored from second on Morris’ single.

Johnson also doubled for the Brahmas (11-13, 4-5), who collected 14 hits and committed one error.

Glendale 11, Valley 10--Chris Majors homered and Jeff Ojeda had three hits to lead the Vaqueros in a 10-inning WSC game at Glendale.

John Bojanac had two hits for Glendale.

For Valley, Greg Struhl had four hits.

The Master’s 5-4, UC San Diego 4-5--Jeff Cole hit a game-winning home run in the fifth inning to boost the Mustangs in the first game of a nondistrict doubleheader at Master’s. Cole, who was two for two, pitched a 10-hit complete game.

The Mustangs had only four singles in the second game. Craig Johnson walked and advanced to second on Peter Wilson’s single to begin a three-run rally in the sixth. Cole walked to load the bases and an RBI single by Dan Bevins and Tony Jaime’s two-run single brought the Master’s to within 5-4.

Cal Lutheran 0-2, Azusa Pacific 9-1--Darnell Mitchell doubled home Tim Lewis with the winning run in the ninth inning of the second game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Azusa Pacific.

Lewis singled and scored from first on Mitchell’s hit as Cal Lutheran (19-10, 9-2) earned a split.
