World Tennis Group Studies Drug Testing
The International Tennis Federation may start drug testing, although officials believe the game is drug-free, Thomas Haldberg of Sweden, the federation’s director of men’s tennis, said today.
“The Assn. of Tennis Professionals says the game is clean and I agree,” he said at a news conference before the Davis Cup match between Czechoslovakia and West Germany.
“Then we could have the argument that if we think the game is clean, why don’t we go ahead with testing to prove it. We are considering such a move,” Haldberg said.
He said the drug tests could become mandatory in Davis Cup and Grand Slam events but emphasized that there was no final decision.
