College Roundup : Moorpark Keeps Streaks Alive, 9-0

Moorpark College kept three streaks alive with a 9-0 Western State Conference softball victory Thursday over Cuesta at Moorpark.

It marked the Lady Raiders’ 23rd conference victory in a row, their 38th consecutive conference home victory and kept them unscored upon in conference games this season.

Moorpark has outscored seven WSC opponents, 51-0.

Sophomore De Dow improved her record to 17-6 by pitching a one-hitter. She struck out four and walked two.

Missy Cress paced Moorpark’s 13-hit attack with a triple and double and two runs batted in.

Chris Singer hit her third home run of the season and Jamie McDaniel smacked her first.

In another softball game:

Cal Lutheran 10-6, Redlands 2-3--Dana Sangster pitched a four-hitter to win the first game and Leslie Stevens pitched a three-hitter to win the second game for Cal Lutheran in a nonconference doubleheader at Redlands.

Michelle Campos had a three-run triple in the fifth inning of the first game for Cal Lutheran (19-12).

In the second game, DeAndra Pilkington was two for four and teammate Teri Rupe hit a two-run home run.

BASEBALL

Pierce 7, Santa Monica 6--With Pierce trailing, 6-4, in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Bobby Weer tripled in Kevin Johnson and Billy Morris.

Tony Jordan then singled home Weer, giving Pierce (13-13, 6-5 in conference play) a WSC victory at home.

Pierce’s Louis Birdt pitched eight innings, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs while striking out seven.

College of the Canyons 9, Santa Barbara 5--Randy Cooper hit a three-run homer in the second inning as Canyons (15-12, 8-3) pulled away early in a WSC game at Canyons.

Canyons’ Alan Sedacca (2-0) pitched eight innings, striking out six and allowing three earned runs on eight hits.

The Cougars’ Scott Roth was two for three with an RBI and Gary Morgan was two for four as Canyons racked up 11 hits.

Moorpark 15, Cuesta 6--Moorpark scored four runs in the seventh and six in the eighth to snap a 4-4 tie in the WSC game at Cuesta. Craig Pearson was three for four for Moorpark (19-9, 8-3), raising his average to .531 (25 for 47) in conference play. Steve Sisco was three for five.

Todd Gerbovaz (4-2) struck out four and yielded two earned runs through 6 1/3 innings.

El Camino 13, Valley 10--Steve Slattery was rocked for 11 runs in the first three innings and the Monarchs never recovered in a nonconference game at El Camino.

Trailing, 13-4, after seven innings, Valley scored two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to make it close.

E. J. Pape had three hits, including his ninth home run of the season--a two-run shot in the fourth--and three RBIs for Valley (21-6-1) and teammate John Stephens added a three-run triple in the ninth.

Mission 9, Compton 8--Albert Torres drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving Mission (7-16, 5-7) a Southern California Athletic Conference victory at home. Mission pitcher Jose Garcia (5-5) went the distance, scattering 10 hits and striking out 13.

Manuel Orozco was two for five with three RBIs and Robert Bradford, who singled to lead off the ninth before being pulled for pinch-runner, also had two hits.
