College Roundup : Moorpark’s Dow Pitches No-Hitter

De Dow came within a sixth-inning walk of pitching a perfect game and settled instead for her fifth career no-hitter as Moorpark College posted a 3-0 win over Ventura in a Western State Conference softball game Friday at Moorpark.

Moorpark, which had its 23-game conference winning streak snapped Wednesday against Canyons, extended its WSC home streak to 39 consecutive wins.

Four players had one hit each for Moorpark, including Audra Olive, whose third-inning single scored Kelly Kauffman from second with the game-winning run.

BASEBALL

L.A. City 7, Mission 3-- Thomas Lee pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits with five strikeouts as L. A. City (6-8-1 in conference play) coasted to a Southern California Athletic Conference win.

City’s Mike Merriweather was two for five with a run scored.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Pierce 52, Cuesta 51--Brice Johnston and Andre Keil each won two events and swam legs on the Brahmas’ victorious 400-yard medley relay team in a Western State Conference meet at Pierce.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Cuesta 99, Pierce 24--The Cougars won 14 of 15 events to swamp Pierce. Bridgette Jackson’s win in the 50-yard backstroke was Pierce’s only win in the Western State Conference meet at Pierce.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Occidental 8, Whittier 1--Occidental won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Occidental. In the singles competition, Sue Hulse, Maro Najarian, Stacy Harris, Kim Black and Lora Moore were winners.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast College d. Pierce 15-9, 15-9, 15-7--Rico Guimares had a team-high 14 kills for Pierce, but the Brahmas’ eight-match winning streak was snapped in the South Coast Conference match at Orange Coast.

Cal State Northridge d. UC Irvine 15-10, 13-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-4-The Matadors, ranked No. 11 nationally, needed five games to knock off the Anteaters in a nonconference match in Irvine.
