Tennis Roundup : Top Players Advance in Japan Open
The top three seeded players, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe, survived gusty winds Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the $752,500 Japan Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.
Lendl beat qualifier Bill Scanlon, 6-2, 6-4, on the hard courts at the Ariake Colosseum; Edberg, of Sweden, defeated Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-4, and defending champion McEnroe routed Wally Masur of Australia, 6-2, 6-0.
Top-seeded Anne Minter of Australia downed Betsy Nagelsen, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the women’s semifinals.
Yugoslav Goran Ivanisevic, 17, upset Henri Leconte of France, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the second round of the $200,000 Swatch Open at Nice, France. Ivanisevic is ranked 88th in the world, Leconte 14th.
Halle Cioffi of Knoxville, Tenn., one day after ousting Tracy Austin, rallied from a 3-0 second-set deficit to beat Donna Faber of Bradenton, Fla., 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round of the Eckerd Open at Largo, Fla.
Austin, 26, playing only her second singles match after a five-year absence, was dealt a a 6-4, 6-3 defeat by Cioffi Wednesday night. Due to an erroneous Associated Press report, the tennis results in Thursday’s editions incorrectly had Austin winning the match.
In an exhibition match at Monte Carlo, Steffi Graf of West Germany beat Martina Navratilova, 6-3, 6-4.
