College Roundup : Canyons Wins Game, Loses Hitter

Although College of the Canyons pounded Cuesta, 9-3, in a Western State Conference game Saturday, the win was bittersweet.

Randy Cooper, who is hitting .470 in conference play, twisted his ankle while sliding into second base in the eighth inning and had to be carried from the field.

“I’ve had many a sprained ankle but I’ve never seen one this big,” said Cooper, who plans to see a doctor today.

Alex Batarse hit a three-run home run in the second and Chris Joy’s home run in the seventh drove in two more runs for Canyons (20-12, 13-4 in conference play and a game behind Ventura in the WSC standings).

In another WSC game:

Bakersfield 7, Pierce 6--With the score tied, 5-5, in the eighth inning, Bakersfield (6-11 in conference play) scored two unearned runs on errors by infielders Kevin Johnson and Billy Morris, then shut down the Brahmas’ ninth-inning rally at Pierce.

Pierce (15-17, 8-9) left the tying run on first in the bottom of the ninth when Doug Johns struck out to end the game.

In other baseball games:

UC San Diego 8-9, The Master’s 3-3--Despite collecting 15 hits, the Mustangs lost both ends of a nonconference doubleheader.

In the first game, Mark MacArthur, Peter Wilson and Jeff Cole each had two hits in a losing effort. MacArthur and Craig Johnson had home runs for The Master’s (14-28-1) in the second game.

Cal Lutheran 13-12, Cal Baptist 8-15--Cal Lutheran’s Anthony Espitia hit two three-run home runs and finished the second game of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader with seven RBIs, but Kingsmen pitchers gave up 20 hits in settling for a split at Baptist.

Cal Lutheran (25-15, 13-6) must now win two conference games to clinch the GSAC championship.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 3-1, Chapman 2-0--The host Lady Matadors (48-14, 12-2) swept a doubleheader from the Lady Panthers (23-21, 4-10), winning the second game in the 12th inning on Char Schmitt’s sacrifice “slap” that scored Jennifer Miller.

Miller started the inning on second base under the tiebreaker rule and moved to third after a wild pitch during an intentional walk.

In the opener, the Lady Matadors had a 2-0 lead after six inning when Chapman’s Sandy Olivas hit a two-run home run in the seventh to tie the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game. But in the ninth, CSUN’s Leilani Artis singled in Michelle Blaha, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Cal Lutheran 4-4, Azusa Pacific 3-0--The Regals, whose only GSAC loss was to Azusa Pacific, exacted revenge at Cal Lutheran.

In the opener, Azusa Pacific’s Dana Swingrover walked Julie Monarrez on four pitches to bring home the winning run for Cal Lutheran (27-14, 13-1).

Teri Rupe broke open a scoreless second game for the Regals, driving in Christy Teffeteller in the fifth and DeeAndra Pilkington in the sixth.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. San Diego State 6-15, 15-8, 15-13, 8-15, 15-7--Neil Coffman and Andrew Greskovics combined for 48 kills and Tom Ribarich had 72 assists in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Northridge.
