A fire broke out in a vacant store Wednesday morning in Kearny Mesa, causing about $300,000 in damage, authorities said.

The blaze, in the 7300 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, was reported by a security guard just after 5 a.m., a fire spokesman said.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the vacant retail space in Independence Square.
