A young man fell to his death onto a concrete walkway at Royals Stadium Thursday night after he tried to do a handstand on a railing, officials said.

Mike Wurzer, 20, died a short time later, apparently of a broken neck, at Truman Medical Center, according to Virginia Erickson, director of shift operations for the hospital.

The man, whose hometown was not immediately known, was flown by helicopter to the hospital after he fell during the eighth inning of the New York Yankees-Kansas City Royals game.

“Witnesses said the young man came down from seats in the view level and attempted to do a handstand on the railing of the portal,” stadium official Herk Robinson said. “Somehow, his momentum carried him forward and he fell below to a concrete walkway, about 15 feet.”

It was the first fatality at the 16-year-old stadium.
